Luna Pier Cook’s Food Photo Studio
Posted on 1 February 2008 under Photos

After a camera accident the other day, Jaden at SteamyKitchen.com posted photos of where she takes photos. As she’s now shooting for print (i.e., a cookbook) hers has kicked up a couple notches from a few weeks ago. At the end of that post she asked to see other examples.
Here’s mine.
In the top photo is the 3CCD HD hard-drive-based video camera I shoot Chef Tad’s videos with. With the addition of the new shotgun microphone on top of the camera, lots of practice with its manual functions, and the addition of an eMac to my editing hardware, quality of the next batch of videos (which will begin Monday evening) will go up quite a bit.
The above photo was shot right where I shoot the majority of my food photos … on a plastic cutting board lying on the cats’ food cart next to the fridge:

As this window faces south in southeastern Michigan I get plenty of natural light through it. Sometimes I wish for a bigger white surface to shoot on … I’ll have to do that at some point. What’s annoying is when I have a shot all set, I’m lining things up on the viewer … and some cat jumps up and lands right in the middle of it all, looking for that food dish on the back corner of that cart. No … no, you’re right … not cool at all.

poor kitty - you’re in her space!
buy a white foam board - they are huge and portable, just hide in the closet. Plus cheap, so if kitty farts on it, you can replace.

There are four cats; Trixie (orange tabby), Nigel (Russian Blue), Matty or Matilda (tuxedo) and Strpes (permanent kitten, “failure to thrive”). They can and will wait those few moments it takes me to shoot a photo, dagnabbit!
As to the foamcore, I’m more worried about the cat vomit than the kitty farts.
I have a place for it … I just have to remember at some point to actually buy it.

It’s amazing what some bloggers will do (or rig up) to get their blog read—ha! How MANY animals (I mean pets) live at your house, anyway?:):)

Besides the four cats, there are also Sam the Pom and Wishbone the Jack Russell Terrier. Yeah, it’s a zoo!

Wow! We want that camera!! Does the shot gun microphone really make a difference in the sound? Would love to add that to our little amateur video camera!
Thanks for sharing!

That mic was only 60 bucks and does pretty well. Here’s where I got it:

Found your site through Jaden’s. Love the natural light in your set up, I wish I had some…
Great blog by the way.

@Rita, you can have the zoo sometimes!
Thanks Scott … I try to follow Jaden’s example as much as possible. Minus the mothering stuff …
