The Demise of a Camera
Posted on 23 June 2008 under Photos
It looks as though the trusty Canon A560 I’ve been using for the photos on this blog for the past year has bitten the dust, at least for now. Some sand may have gotten into the lens mechanism, but it also appears to have been dropped at some point recently. Now the lens won’t open at all so it’ll have to go to the shop when we’re able to do so.
I still have a few photos to post so you’ll see those. I’ll have to find out how well my video camera does as with its still-camera mode. It doesn’t have the necessary macro function though.
For some reason, I feel like attacking a half-gallon of good ice cream with nothing more than a spoon …

Sorry about your camera. If there isn’t a support group for that, there should be.
Btw, you’re the first Michigander whose blog I stumbled onto very recently, and have enjoyed reading; pictures are wonderful too.
Hope you’ll get that camera fixed soon.

@Memories, once it’s fixed maybe I’ll finally learn to take pics as nice as yours!

I’d like to join that support group for broken cameras!
I’m getting a hand-me-down snapshot camera in a few weeks, but it’s nowhere near as good as my single lens reflex 35mm that died a few months ago.

Gotta jump in here.
I have never been averse to playing the “snob” routine (as more than a few people may know), but when I purchased my first digital camera, it was a lowly Kodak DX3900 from a “big box” retailer many, many moons ago. In other words, a camera far removed from the fancy SLR 35mm jewels that I now see so often on our travels (and which sometimes makes me want to hide my “lowly” Kodak camera in my pocket).
My cheapie Kodak has traveled thousands of miles, has been dropped a countless number of times, has been sprayed with salt-water surf in the Yucatan, has been to the UK three times, has been deep-frozen in the wilds of Alaska . . . and has survived ALL of the brain-dead TSA and customs-officer’s beefy hands and so-called “inspections.”
It STILL takes wonderful photos. In fact, I now have over 12,000 photos in my collection.
It still works beautifully, and refuses to give me a reason to replace it . . . despite my embarrassment when some dude looks at me with disdain while photographing the Blarney Castle or the wisps of steam rising from the magnificent Mount St. Helens.
Sometimes, simple can be better.

@Paula you can’t beat those 35mm SLRs. Did you ever try motion picture film for use as slides. Great resolution and color depth!
@DC, I can actually beat you on that. Sitting right here is my old DC3200 which still works … even though the battery compartment is held shut with duct tape. They sure are workhorses, aren’t they? The neighborhood kids have nicknamed this thing “The Brick” because it does kinda look like one.
