Spillson’s Rice Pudding

Back on April 17th, I’d mentioned the Toledo Blade had published an article on Spillson’s Rice Pudding, which is made in Monroe. What I found odd about Jon Chavez’s article was that he never mentioned how he felt about the pudding itself, only what other people thought of it. Now, it seems to me that if you’re going to write an article about a food-related business, you’re also going to have to sample the goods and give an honest opinion when you write it up. I could be wrong in this assumption, but I’ll tell you what, I’d never give up the chance to do so. I’m reminded of shows such as one with Giada De Laurentiis, where she visited the main Parmesan cheese facility in Parma, Italy. They then showed her on a train with half a cheese wheel on her lap, taking chunks out of it on occasion and eating it plain, enjoying every bite. Sure, Mr. Chavez was talking about the company from a business aspect. But hey, it’s food, ya’ gotta eat it!

It was other voices in that article that made me go looking for Spillson’s Rice Pudding. Voices like this one:

Robin White, a manager and purchaser for Rudy’s Hot Dog, has offered the rice pudding at the chain’s six Toledo area restaurants for three years … “It’s the best rice pudding, and I’m not just saying that,” she said. The chain sells as much rice pudding as it does cake or pie.

Ok, that one did it for me. I had to try this stuff.

In the article, it was mentioned Spillson’s Rice Pudding is also carried by Ideal Hot Dog. One Ideal Hot Dog location, tucked away just west of the intersection of Alexis and Lewis in Toledo, is one of our favorite places to get food that makes you go, “Oh, I’m gonna feel this tomorrow …” Mary and I went to Ideal Friday evening for dinner, and snagged two containers of the pudding. I decided to take them home and try them later on, as a kind of late dessert for the two chili dogs I was having there at the restaurant. Read the rest of this entry…
