Was the Civil War really about slavery?
Who first attempted to prohibit the importation of slaves?
The State of Virginia had already gone on record as opposing the African slave trade. By an act of the General Assembly of the State of Virginia, while Patrick Henry was Governor, the state outlawed the slave trade in Virginia. It was done October 5, 1778, then years before Massachusetts and thirty years before the British Parliment acted on the trade. The action of Virginia was the first step taken in that direction in the civilized world. What do you think? Are our history books correct?
