Sunken Civil War Blockade Runner Found

It has been recently reported in various Historical magazines that a Blockade Runner named the Kate Dale has been located in the alligator infested waters of the Hillsborough River. This ship was known to carry Confederate Cotton to Cuba and Beyond, Returning to Tampa with rum, medicine and food until Unionists burned the ship owned by Tampa’s James McKay on October 17, 1863.

McKay had started an import-export business in Tampa around 1855 and when the war came he turned several of his ships into blockade runners. McKay was imprisoned by Federals in October 1861, and later released after he was believed to pledge support to the Union. Locals suspected his ships were often allowed to pass through the blockade in exchange for secret service to the North.

Sounds like this could be a site of interest in the years to come to Civil War emthusiasts of both loyalties.

Quote of the Day!

I am not sure who first said this….it was not me

“History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives.”

Sounds like this was said about the times we live in right now. That leads me to believe that even financial ruin is cyclical. Once the generation dies out that lived through it, or we retire all the people who have the experience because we think they are too costly to have around, it repeats itself. I would like to challenge all large corporations to keep at least a few of our experienced executives around for a long time….even if it costs you larger salaries than your newly graduated brains, just so these people can be the thorns in the younger generations side, and remind them of what just happened. I think it would cost everyone alot less in the long run.

What do you think?

Historical Quote for Dec 17, 2008

This quote comes to from H.G. Wells:

“Human History becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe”

I guess the logic in this is a company, communities and government due to being conscious of their bottom line first and foremost, pushes the experienced and aged out the door, at some point, quickly. “Out with the old and in with the new.” My boat club just recently did that. Now the new board membersare all young, with new ideas. But, many of the so called “new ideas” have been tried in the past, in some form, they (we) are just too young to remember. My point is every board, every division of every company and branch of law needs the older generation because of their experience. Companies should spend a little more for that experience to avoid spending more money later when everything goes to hell due to inexperience. I believe history tells us this country, for example, has gone througheconomical rough timesbefore even in the housing industry…what did we learn from it, and where are those people to stear us out of thisor their memoirs for our politicians to study? There are some lessons and protocol that could be duplicated from within the fireside recordings from a prior president….can you tell me who that is?????????

We’ll talk more on this subject and those records. Much can be learned!!!!!

Dec. 10th Historical Quote

Here is another one from Thomas Jefferson for us to think about:

“A government big enough to give you everything you want, is a government strong enough to take everything you have!”

We need to remember, our forefathers never wanted the Federal Government to be the most powerful, that takes the power from our hands. That is why no matter which state votes in to leagalize medical marijuana, there will still be arrests, because it is not a Federal law. Federal law statesmedical marijuanais not legal, therefore it is not legal period, and arrests will still be carried out. We have done this to ourselveswhen we allowed our leaders tochange our governmentand allow the Federal Government to be the main power in this country. This began with the end of the Civil War as a condition ( so to speak) for the South to rejoin the Union (the articles of confederation were dissolved: a document that explained the conditions under which every state agreed to be united.) After that time, the Federal Governmentbecame the supreme power, nowfollowed by the media, then the states, and then us,somewhere toward the bottom because they need us to pay for everything, including their lunches when more and more peopleare failing tofeed their families. This has got to stop….it is already wheeling out of control.

Historical Quote for Dec. 8, 2008

This one comes to us through Thomas Jefferson.

“And to preserve their independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude.”

We are making our government stronger and stronger and we are becoming more and more dependent on it. That is NOT what our forefathers intended!

Hopes this gives you food for thought.

1812 Battlefield, Monroe Michigan

Was asked an interesting question the other day. I was asked why a battlefield for the War of 1812? Why not something from the Civil War due to Custer? Who would actually visit an 1812 site?

All good questions that I am sure have crossed the minds of other people in the area. My answer was first and foremost, a battlefield, properly managed can do all sorts of good things for an area that needs jobs now, and in the future. It also allows for small businesses to spring up as well as other opportunities I haven’t thought of yet.

The next important thing to mention is that we do not have many battlefields commemmorating that time period in the United States. It could serve as a part of an education for every American student whether born here or abroad in understanding how this nation was formed. Our history, is the history that needs to be emphasized in our schools first, and then World History later, when they are in jr. high and high school…not the other way around.

This battlefield could really nurture our stumbling economy in this area. The Battlefield could connect two other battlefields in our (somewhat area) including Fort Meiggs in Maumee, Ohio. If set up properly, the three could advertise, starting from all three sites independently, guided tours in a bus for seniors, historical students etc. Could even allow for a nights stay somewhere which brings business into local hotels.

Do not forget this battlefield also opens the door for continued education on into and including the Civil War. It will develope also. Renactments from that time period can also happen. Just remember since the battlefield is to be controlled by the Feds, it is more than likely no renactments involving firing of weaponry will be allowed. Weaponry demonstrations have to happen off the field. The (Battlefield Association????) will have to contract with a local farmer, set up the proper insurance coverages for both entities and have the event off site. Even the famous Gettysburg Renactment every year in July happens off-site. (which stimulates book sales because to fully understand what is happening, since it is not on the field, you really have to know your history unless you are a gun junkie and love the noise.)

Bottom line…this is a good thing. Just a side suggestion…with all of the homes for sale and in distress. Now whould be the time to form a samll group of private citizens to buy up a few of these to be used as B&B’s decorated mid 1800’s for the renactors and history buffs. Once they assume the persona for that weekend, in that time period, they love authentic verses modern. (Just a suggestion and yes I would love to be involved)

Republican Party and Lincoln!

In answer to the question what party was responsible for freeing the slaves and saving the Union?

The Republican Party which grew out ot the resistance to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which overrode the Missouri-Compromise and allowed slavery to spread into the Western territory by popular sovereignty.

The Republican party absorbed anti-slavery Whigs and most Know-Nothings. It became more moderate in its stance on the exclusion of slavery and denounced John Brown’s raid. The platform endorsed a protective tariff, the Homestead Act, and internal improvements.

In the midst of the Civil War, the Republican party asked that the country continue to fight according to Lincoln’s war measures. The party demanded an unconditional surrender and supported a constitutional amendment to end slavery.

The Democrats were split along “war” and “peace” factions, but managed to unite behind George McClellan in 1864. With a “Union First” (you notice no talk of slavery) then “Peace” platform, the Democrats appeased both those who desired to defeat the Confederacy at all costs as well as those who favored negotiation and compromise.

How did these two party’s ever get so messed up that the Democrats elected a “Black Man”. How does anyone voting today not spend the time to research the history of these party’s and map their development before voting???

The democratic party voted in a man they wouldn’t have cared less existed in 1861 or as it sounds in 1864. The same time period today’s Black Race continues to throw up to the white race at every chance. The excuse as to why so many that are Black voted for Obama without a second glance as to the democratic platform is quote, ”well the party changed and developed over the years and they are for the Black Man”, Really???? Looks like all the democrats are doing is enabling a Race, due to all the governmental programs for free money, to be dependant on their government, and never do anything for themselves. My question then is, if you want racism to stop, then why hasn’t the Black Race changed and developed in their thinking as time has allowed society and political parties to change? Has this hatred for the white race gone too far?????? The white race can no longer have any organization or institution that caters to just the white race (and don’t mistake my comment, maybe that is good!) But if the race that founded this country cannot have exclusive institutions because that is racism, then why can the Black race have these organizations and institutions catering and supporting only the Black race? Is the White race actually who should be called the racists? Or, has the Black race become that?????? It is a question we should all consider. The arguement of race and color is an excuse, and a crutch that no longer applies. I for one am tired of it!!! I would like to see the people of this country concentrate on the real issues and problems faced by the middle class. The upper class has will always take care of themselves and the lower class the government takes care of everything. Lets cure the problems faced by the class that pays for everything, the one that doesn’t have multiple companies and tax shelters to hide their money in. The one that can’t afford to send their kids to college.

Lincoln’s political party!

Let’s mix a little history with a little politics to show us all how politics has changed since the Civil War.

What political party was Lincoln apart of? The same political party that fought and freed the slaves. I’ll give you a day or two to research this one out. I would love to hear what you think???????
