I don’t know about you, but I never get tired of seeing (observing) our national symbol, the bald eagle! I saw one again yesterday, and it made my day. Fifteen years ago it was an extremely rare sight to see an eagle in Monroe county. Today it is almost commonplace! I’m not for certain, but I believe we now have approximately 16 nesting pairs residing in the area. Chalk one up for conservation. Eagles have made such a comeback nationally that they have been removed from the endangered species list. If we , as a nation, continue to be diligent with our resources, and reverse the effects of past sins (i.e. pollution), our children will reap the benefits. Clean air, clear water, and pristine wilderness should be the goal of all who cherish this great land we have been entrusted with.
The Hebrew profit Isaiah said “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings of eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Have a wonderful and exciting new year.

Here in Grand Haven I’ve had as many as 13 in my yard and over 50 in veiw during the late Jan shad run in the grand river .
On valentines day in 99 or 2000 I saw one that was twice as big as all the rest . Do you remember the nest on the north side of Otter Creek between Norm Howe’s and Rainbow Marina
You’re right, Mike; there’s nothing like watching an eagle, and nothing quite like seeing one swoop down and grab a fish from the water. Living on the lake in Luna Pier afforded me that opportunity more than a few times. There were two specific instances regarding eagles that I shall never forget. The first was seeing seven of them (good Biblical number!) all bunched together on the ice just 50 yards offshore, and the second was a little more dramatic. The fall winds had blown the water out into the lake leaving a good 300 yards of lake bottom exposed. There were several shallow pools where the bottom had been somewhat deeper and a large fish had become trapped in one. What drew my attention was the six or seven seagulls standing around either waiting for it to die or trying to figure out how to kill and eat it. Suddenly out of the sky dropped a huge eagle that landed and strolled up to the gulls as if to say, “Let me show you how it’s done, boys!” and proceeded to leap onto the fish, sink his talons into it and then began pumping those giant wings to soar off into the sky and back to his nest in the Toledo Beach Marina woods with his dinner. It was spectacular. What a great example for Isaiah to use to assure us that we too can rise up and soar above the storms of life when we trust in and then wait on the Lord. Blessings to you and your family!
