Name That Bird

Ok you bird experts out there, I need help on this one!   I spotted this bird around my son-in-laws pond last weekend, and  was able to get a pretty decent picture of him.   At first I thought it was a coot, but upon further inspection ruled that out.   It could be a member of the coot family, or some type of heron.   I couldn’t find him in our bird book, so I’m hoping  one of you readers can help me out   My grandkids think I know everything, and they couldn’t believe I was stumped on this one.  Bail me out guys and gals!
