Just got in from Hillsdale, and we did great on the geese. We hunted three mornings and got our limit each day. Usually we were filled out by 9:00 a.m. and had the rest of the day to get ready for our evening deer hunt. Believe it or not these are the first geese I have ever harvested in my 50 years of hunting. To say I had a blast would be an understatement. With only 8 “magnum” decoys, and limited experience on the goose call, we did good! Three of the geese we took were of the “giant Canadian” type, and trust me they are big! I now have a freezer full of plump goose breast just waiting to be prepared correctly. If anyone has a recipe they want to share, please pass it along. I have one of my own, but would like to know how others “cook their goose!”
Friday, upon arrival, we made a blind along the fence row, and planned on setting the decoys to the east of us in the soybean field. As I said we did great, but if I could of changed anything it would of been the decoy position. Me being a rookie (that’s my excuse) I didn’t realize that looking into the rising sun could effect you seeing the geese flying from that direction! DUH!! It’s a good thing they were flying from all directions. The first goose ,of my life, was one coming from behind, that I called right to our position. I almost didn’t have time to drop the goose call, then drop the goose! I was able to call several flocks of geese to our position, and felt good that I didn’t scare them away. Tony and I kept pace with one another, basically taking turns on the geese “committed” to landing among the decoys.
As I said we did great, and it was certainly a learning experience, but we “missed” on plenty of opportunities. It may take awhile to get this type of wing shooting down to be respectable! It is not as easy as it looks, and geese are as tough as anything with feathers can be. I think I’m hooked!

Wow, looks like a great hunt. Congratulations. I don’t know that I’ve ever eaten goose. I’m guessing it’s good.
By the way, has anyone told you that your comment section doesn’t seem to work in FireFox? At least it doesn’t for me. I had to switch over to IE to be able to comment.
Awesome, Mike! Good work…I’ve never killed a goose, but we like to cook duck rolled in flour, fried on a hot skillet with diced onions and apples, then we throw the onions and apples out and eat the meat. Onions and apples seem to soak up the gamey flavor and we’re left with some pretty tasty fowl. I do hate throwing the onions out, though as fried onions are hard to beat!
