Just got off the phone with brother Darryl, and he had just heard from brother Randy, who is at bear camp. Randy’s trip started off on the wrong foot this past Wednesday, as his “bait hauling” trailer broke down just a hundred miles from home. After 5 hours and $160.00 dollars he was on his way again. Thursday, after checking only one bait, he called to inform me that my 4-wheeler had quit running. Hopefully it’s something simple (like the chain coming off.)
Randy’s son Justin drove up to give Randy a hand with replenishing the baits, from Darryl’s trip a week ago. His phone call today was to let us know that so far four out of the five baits were tore up. He was on his way to check that fifth one, and we suspect it will have been visited also. Randy and Justin set their stands up this morning on a bait site with multiple piles of bear scat surrounding the area. Darryl and his son Derek have plans on setting up on a site where the bear have been rolling over 200-300 pound boulders in search for food.
It is a bummer that I can’t be with those guys for that first weeks hunt. I’m sure they will have some action, and bring home a couple bears. Dean and I have to wait for that third week, but hopefully our private property stands will still have bear in the area. Will keep ya posted.
Mike

We’ll be looking for the bear hunt updates!… fun to follow your fall bear hunts… your sucess rate in the past years has been pretty impressive! Wish you all the best season ever! Elk hunting is in full swing here… son Tom got a nice 5 pt last Saturday… we’re sure happy for him. It’s his first archery bull. Gary and I have been out twice… only heard a few half hearted bugles, and never saw any elk… but the seasons young yet!Inbetween all this I’ve been trying to squeeze in a Antelope hunt… sat two days so far over a water hole. Had several groups of does and fawns and one nice buck come into the water… but they chose the bottom end of the pond to drink… which was 90 yards from my blind…sure was pretty to watch though! It’s really too big of a pond for one person to cover… I’m hoping we can get my Dad out before the season ends and he and I could both sit at the pond… Look forward to seeing pictures of your bear hunt!
I hope the four-wheeler problem is something simple, and hopefully they leave a few bear for you, Mike.
