McCain, Then and Now

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Funny, he used to pretend like he cared about the loss of American lives from needless foreign intervention. I guess that was only when a democrat — Bill Clinton in this case — was responsible for the intervention, and subsequently, the dead Americans. It appears McCain didn’t like Clinton’s violent enforcement of democracy abroad and nation building.

The Fed’s Flaws

Monday, February 4th, 2008

A reader sent me this article listing “10 reasons to be critical of the Federal Reserve.” It provides a good analysis and explanation of our current economic downturn. I especially found number 10 to be relevant. I believe that most of these flaws are inherent in the system, rather than the result of poor decisions by the Fed chairman. The idea that a small organization like the Federal Reserve — as experienced as they may be — could predict and adapt to fluctuations in the market, better than the market itself, seems silly to me.

Bob Murphy attempts to explain the system and its flaws in this radio interview. It’s lengthy but fairly informative.

No Food For Fat People

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Mississippi legislators introduced a bill aimed at restricting restaurant owners from serving food to people who are obese, as defined through criteria given by the state health department. Restaurants would be monitored by the state to ensure they are in compliance.

From the actual text of House Bill No. 282:

An act to prohibit certain food establishments from serving food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the state department of health; to direct the department to prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese and to provide those materials to the food establishments; to direct the department to monitor the food establishments for compliance with the provisions of this act; and for related purposes. Be it enacted by the legislature of the state of Mississippi:

I don’t see this being passed, but the fact that bills like this are even being proposed is startling, and at the rate we’re going, it won’t be long before they become laws.

‘Know Before You Vote’

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Here’s an interesting website with side-by-side comparisons of all the remaining candidates, complete with sources. It’s a good way to find out where the candidates stand since they (with the exception of Ron Paul) don’t tell us the truth. The sources on this site reveal just how much they actually lie to us.

Last Quarter’s GOP Fundraising

Friday, February 1st, 2008

The LA Times reports that Ron Paul raised the most money last quarter; exceeding the next highest by over $5 million.

By the thousands Paul’s fervent followers donated $19.95 million to the “Ron Paul Revolution.” He spent $17.75 million and at year’s end had $7.8 million cash on hand, making him the only Republican candidate to increase his fundraising totals in every quarter of 2007. According to his website, Paul’s Paulunteers have contributed another $4.1 million this month to…

Every other candidate spent more than they brought in. Mitt Romney gave himself $18 million and still managed to wind up with less cash on hand than Paul. And this is being reported on the 51st anniversary of Ron and his wife Carol Paul. Grassroots supporters have organized another “money bomb” which has already started:
