my fave books as a kid
November 17th, 2009 · No Comments
After writing about the kid book series featuring author Gordon Korman(see THIS blog post and THIS press release from Monroe Public), I remembered my favorite book series from the school library… the ones where you could make decisions and choose your own ending.
Google says these were called Choose Your Own Adventure. If I’m remembering correctly, every couple pages you had to make a choice. Something like “If you have enough food, turn to page 35 to continue on the trail over the mountain. If you decide to turn around and head back to the village, turn to page 72.”
There were lots of choices and lots of endings, you might starve to death or walk off the edge of a cliff or be eaten by a bear. But there was always one ending where you were the hero, and you could read the book again, make different decisions and keep trying to have a good ending.
This link takes you to the CYOA site.
Those were great books! Great for the reluctant reader. I’ve also started reading the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series, which is really fun.
I should start my “Dear Santa” list now.

Monroe Public Author Visits – Gordon Korman
November 17th, 2009 · No Comments
Author Gordon Korman is visiting Monroe Public Schools this week. I heard part of the assembly, and realized I hadn’t made the connection that Korman is one of the writers of an interesting concept for a book series I had seen talked about a little bit about on TV.
From wikipedia…
The 39 Clues is a series of adventure books that are published by Scholastic. The main part of the series is ten books revolving around the adventures of siblings Amy and Dan Cahill. They agree to the offer in their grandmother Grace’s will and search for 39 clues scattered around the world. The series also combines online gaming and card collecting along with the reading into a unique, interactive experience. Six cards come with every book, and more are sold separately in Card Packs. There are also activities related to the 39 Clues online.
