national walk-a-thon

May 16th, 2009 · No Comments

Today, Saturday May 16, 2009 is the 11th annual Angelman Syndrome walk-a-thon.

Each year the Angelman Syndrome Foundation holds an annual walk-a-thon to increase awareness about AS and raise the much needed funds that support Angelman-specific research, education, and general support.  Because Angelman Syndrome is “rare”, there isn’t a whole lot of government or private funds going into research. Last year, for the first time, one million dollars was raised by the walk-a-thon.

In 2004, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to 3 scientists for their discovery and characterization of the ubiquitin pathway of protein degradation. AS is the first human genetic disease shown to be caused by malfunction of the ubiquitin pathway.

My oldest daughter has this neuro-genetic disorder. The Michigan walk is held this year in Eastpointe.  A local family will be participating.  Please check out their online personal fundraising page and consider making a donation. Thank you.
