Safety City – blown away

Monroe Public Schools (in cooperation with the Sheriff’s department and community partners) has offered Safety City as a summer community education program for many years.

At the Safety City graduation on Friday evening at Waterloo School, the highlight was the LifeFlight landing.  The wind from the helicopter was so strong, several kids sitting in their folding lawnchairs were literally blown over. I knew it would be loud and kick up dust, but the wind was surprising. I was thankful I had forgotten to lug chairs with me.

A moment of silence was observed for little Neveah Buchanan.  Stranger danger was stressed in this year’s camp because of that incident.

This year my son attended, and is now a self proclaimed expert on safety. “That’s not safe!” and “Oh yeah, safety, that’s what I’m talking about!” are his phrases for the week.

We were driving to the ball fields one night, when the kids saw a bag had fallen from someone’s car and clothes were laying in the roadway.

In all of his five-year-old safety city wisdom, he says “That’s not safe! A car could trip over those clothes, fall down and get on fire.”
