school milk prices – too much!

September 28th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Monroe Public charges 50 cents for a carton of milk.  So I’m sending in $2.50 a week for milk per child.  $7.50 for milk a week.  Not a math whiz but I think…

1/2 pint for fifty cents

.5 pint = $.50

2 cartons = 1 pint = $1

8 pints in a gallon = $8 a gallon

That just seems excessive.  I can buy a gallon for $2 at the store.  I realize there is packaging involved, but $6 of packaging?

I’m sure its way uncool for me to bring a glass of milk up to school for the kids.  Milk in thermos never went over well.

I prefer the kids have milk with lunch, but I’m going to seriously look at alternatives.

I certainly hope the school is not making money off of cartons of milk.  Is that silly to expect they wouldn’t?  They have free and reduced lunch, why not free and reduced milk?

    Good point with the math!
My pediatrician recommends 16 oz. milk a day so I’m thinking milk for breakfast, milk for dinner and they can take water for lunch. I know it’s not the popular option but it’s hard to justify those prices…
On a side note, I think it’s ridiculous that you can buy pop so cheap yet water in a bottle costs more (don’t get me on selling water in the first place)! It’s so hard to eat healthy when it can be so challenging to make it affordable…

I am in the D303 school district in the suburbs of Chicago. I have been appalled by the price of milk in the schools for years. It currently costs .60 per pint! I have not yet, but I plan to FOIA the contract for milk. We should be encouraging our kids to drink Milk….this does not encourage….
