New Guitar Gods on cover of Stone: VOTE HERE!

Hendrix, Garcia, Harrison and Stevie Ray are gone. Clapton, Richards, Page and Townshend are nearing retirement age, so it’s probably time for the music world to find new guitar heroes to worship.
The latest issue of Rolling Stone features a portrait of John Mayer, Derek Trucks (Allman Bros.) and John Frusciante (Chili Peppers) under the heading “The New Guitar Gods.”
I dunno, I’m all for pop-rock focusing on good guitar playing. But not sure how I feel about calling these three guys guitar gods. Maybe I would consider Trucks to be on his way, because he’s certainly paying his dues playing with the Allman Bros. and as part of Clapton’s touring band. But not sure how I feel about the other two.
It’s going to take a while before Mayer can live down “Your Body is a Wonderland,” but I am glad to see that boy changing his ways and do some mean things with a Stratocaster (and a VW Beetle for that matter). And Frusciante has actually been out there a while now doing that funk, grunge thing. But if I was picking (pun intended) a guitarist who is on the scene today, I would be looking at Derek Trucks’ bandmate, Warren Haynes, who is all over the jamband scene playing not only with the AB, but Govt. Mule and The Dead. He’s doesn’t take as pretty of a picture as the other guitar-slingers, but I think he’s more than earned the title.
Any other opinions?…

Mayer has actually really grown on me. He’s got a ways to go, before I can forgive his ode to Jennifer Love Hewitt, but he’s getting there.
February 14th, 2007 at 5:25 am
I understand your reluctance to accept this title for them. being able to play the guitar very well doesn’t mean you are going to be a good guitar player….if you know what I mean. and it really doesn’t mean you are going to be a good songwriter. case in point: John Mayer. that’s only my opinion though. when I think of guitar gods, I think of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. I can’t really think of any new artists who compare. If it were up to me though, I wouldn’t have picked those guys.
February 14th, 2007 at 10:17 am
Exactly. We won’t know who our “gods” are until 10-15 years from now. I do agree that guys like Mayer and Trucks are on the forefront of this new wae of guitar players. i would also add Jack White or Sonny Landreth. The ones that go above and beyond just playing guitar are the ones that rise to the top, such as Jimmy Page. He played guitar, produced, played mandolin. George Harrison played sitar and slide. If there’s more to it than just playing the hell out of a guitar than that in my opinion is what sets a guitar playeer apart and puts them on another level.
February 14th, 2007 at 11:03 am
I agree.
February 19th, 2007 at 2:45 am
So i went to see the Bx3 concert last night. For those not familiar, it is the bass-players version of the G3 concert tour. Bx3 stars Stu Hamm, Billy Sheahan and Jeff Berlin. WOW now THESE guys are guitar gods! But virtually unknown to the general public! Mostly sidemen and soloists on independent labels. Their guitar player…his name is Jude Gold. He also just happens to be the editor in chief of Guitar Player magazine and a writer for Bass Player mag. Now he is one of the most incrible guitar players I’ve ever seen. He does things I would have never imagined on a guitar. It just amazes me the talent out there that NOBODY knows about!!!!!!!
February 19th, 2007 at 4:40 am
Stu Hamm played with Joe Satriani…right? That’s impressive.
February 19th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
I wonder if Rolling Stone’s article was intended for a more mainstream guitar god. I think the talent of Buckethead should not be overlooked. He experiements and collaborates in different genres including metal, rock, electronica, classical and even latin.
February 19th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
I think that most guitar players today are kinda unoriginal, that’s why I dislike bands that just have guitar and drums. Nobody really does anything that great. Some guys play alot of notes and think they’re cool and some just try and act cool but who really plays good, I mean really good, that isn’t old or over the age of 50. I don’t find Mayer exciting at all. I agree with Frank that in 15 years you’ll know who the guitar Gods are because they will be playing well then and will have been doing good stuff throughout. If you wanna listen to some good guitar plyers listen to Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, James Burton, or Steve cropper, and not to mention the aforementioned Gods of yesteryear from Rolling Stone. I think the real Gods of our time are yet to be found or are shadowed by the mainstream or some other elements.
February 19th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
Yes, Hamm played with Satriani…Eric Johnson, Vai, among others…
Guitar gods are not necessarily mainstream. Just look at the aforementioned guys with Hamm…Vai, Satch, Johnson…the average Joe has no idea who these guys are, but in the guitar community, they are seriously considered to be the top in the business!!!!! When I first started playing guitar and would read lists such as this, Yngwie Malmsteen would ALWAYS be listed as won of the top 10 guitarists in the world and I would dissmiss him, because I HAD NOT HEARD OF HIM! But as I matured in my musical tastes, I have since become a fan of Yngwie, seen him in concert and agree…he is a GOD! (don’t tell him i said that though, his ego doesn’t need any more inflation!) But just because Joe nobody hasn’t heard of a guitarist doesn’t mean the aren’t to be considered amongst one the greats on the Mt. Olympus of Rock & Roll!
February 19th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
as much as I can appreciate an exceptional guitar player, I have a greater appreciation for songwriting ability and how a song comes together as a whole.
no matter what sound you are looking for, I’ve come to the conclusion that the mainstream is usually not going to be the best place to find what you are looking for. I don’t fully understand why so much tripe garbage draws such a large audience, but that’s what tends to happen. luckily we live in a time where it is easy to quickly search through the infinite bands that are out there waiting to be heard.
February 19th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
AMEN BROTHER!
February 22nd, 2007 at 11:18 am
wow. I can’t believe how little respect you guys are giving to frusciante.
In my mind he’s way more significant than a guy like Satriani or Steve Vai, because his music is actually really interesting, dynamic and progressive. Furthermore, he writes and sings (but hey, that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms).
Mayer? I wouldn’t put him in the same category as a true poet like Frusciante, I’m sorry. As a guitarist, I’m entitled to my artistic opinion and you guys can have yours.
February 22nd, 2007 at 12:37 pm
I would put Joe Bonamassa in the New Guitar god list along with Trucks, and Warren Haynes. John Frusciante never should have been put on the list
February 22nd, 2007 at 12:43 pm
He technically plays pedal steel, not regular guitar, but Robert Randolph is absolutely amazing. Jack White is awesome but I definitely don’t think he’s Hendrix/Clapton level talent; in fact, I think Mayer tops him in terms of guitar skill.
February 22nd, 2007 at 1:19 pm
After seeing Mayer on the Clapton “Crossroads” DVD I gotta vote him in for sure!! The dude can play!! Hearing some good raves on Johnny Lang too, tho haven’t seen him play. There used to be a true “god” of the axe in Detroit back in the 70s and 80s by the name of Dombrowski who used to lay ‘em down pretty good. Wonder if this is the same dude….
February 22nd, 2007 at 1:22 pm
oops, forgot this guy, Michael Angelo Batio, who seems to be able to put together a few notes….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rutyA12z3Ok
February 22nd, 2007 at 1:32 pm
Joe Bonamassa, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Bonamassa and Joe Bonamassa!!!!
February 22nd, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Joe Bonamassa should be on this list for sure. Absolutely brilliant and versatile guitarist.
February 22nd, 2007 at 2:01 pm
well for me, the guy from the doors,i forget his name, jack white since he has formed the raconteurs, but only since. lee ranaldo, john mascis, i think thats right, w/e dinosaur jr guy!!
bo diddley. and the black keys, hes not a guitar god but i love his style and his sound!
February 22nd, 2007 at 6:46 pm
Doyle Dykes might just be the best guitar player I have ever seen as far as finger picking goes. here is a video of him doing some fancy stuff:
Tricky Pickin’
he’s so good it makes me throw up in my mouth.
February 22nd, 2007 at 7:11 pm
speaking of guitar gods: don’t forget that the great Hubert Sumlin is going to be at the RRCA in Monroe this weekend as part of the MCLS Annual Blues Festival. Sumlin was a member of Howlin’ Wolf’s band for many years and qualifies and as a blues guitar legend.
February 22nd, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Philip Sayce of Peace Machine
Philip formerly played with Jeff Healey, Uncle Kracker and Melissa Etheridge’s bands.
Guthrie Govan is another. He’s played with recent incarnation of Yes and now has a solo release “Erotic Cakes”.
Both guitarists have myspace pages with 4 of their latest tracks available for listening.
February 23rd, 2007 at 2:20 am
For those who diesmiss Jack White…tsk tsk! You need to see the man in concert! The things he can do with a guitar…the FULL sound he can create with only a guitar and drum kit. ANd a very minimalist drummer at that…To dismiss Jack as a guitarist, because you don’t like the drummer or the concept of the group is ludacris. He was equally a good a player with the Stripes as he is with the racontuers. And he’s done a lot of comeo stuff too…playing on and pruducing LorettaLynns Grammy Winning album. He’s a very underrated guitarist…a very versitile guitarist and a musical genius in my opinion.
Yes, I agree Joe Bonomassa…I forgot all about him. Also RObert Randolf…yes he plays pedal steel, but he can tear it up on a strat as well. The guy is also very innovative, taking a traditional country/gospel instrument and just rocking the hell out of it, to a point beyond recognition. The guy is definately on his way to “god” status.
Here’s one that’s been around for quite a while, so I’m sure he’s long been considdered a “god” amongst guitarist, but Steve Morse is an amazing musician! He played with post-Ritchie Blackmore Deep Purple, and the Dixie Dreggs as well as a brilliant solo career. Check him out.
or Paul Gilbert
or Joe Stump.
I can keep on going… There’s a lot of these guys who came out in the ’80s…like EVH (or STump/Gilbert/Morse/Vai/Satch…) who just kinda get lumped in the Clapton/Hendrix era, but really, they are Todays Guitar God’s…it won’t till another 10 years down the road or so that we elevate Mayer & Co to the next level of guitar worshipdom…
February 23rd, 2007 at 2:20 am
Tom Morello
February 23rd, 2007 at 2:38 am
I can’t believe that nobody has really talked about Johnny Lang or Kenny Wayne Sheppard. I mean c’mon…KWS basically did an apprenticeship with BB King himself!!! These cats can sure play the blues!!!!
February 23rd, 2007 at 3:11 am
one name…gary moore!
February 23rd, 2007 at 5:42 am
Now here’s a couple guys hat might spark some debate, only because of the genre they are classified under. Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. While they may be country guitarists, they are two of the hottest players in the music scene today. They bring a rock and blues element to country music like no others. I’d gladly put Brad paisley up against any of the young guys out there today like mayer & co. Paisley cooks on a Telecaster. Hands down.
February 23rd, 2007 at 8:01 pm
There is no question that Jack White is the greatest guitar player in music today. If you ever get a chance to see him in concert, go see him. I gurantee you that he will make you a believer. You failed to mention a few other great players. Like Joe Satriani. Listen to Surfing with the alien and I think you will agree he is one of the all-time greats. or. the heir apparent to Stevie ray. Kenny wayne sheppard. He is the best blues guitarist around right now.
February 24th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
hahaha… Doesn’t Rolling Stone have a habit of really messing it up when they tell us who the ‘Guitar Gods’ are, or as seen a couple of years ago, really screwing it up while listing ‘The Top 25 Guitarists of All Time’?
Sure, Trucks and Mayer are very good and Frusciante is incredibly influential, perhaps the most out of the three as proved by show attendence, albums sold and even being in the guitar magazines all the time with his transcription to RHCP songs.
And if your looking at this as a blues thing, Mayer was influenced by SRV from day one and can play like a master. With that being said, Jeff Ammend from Minneapolis smokes all of them and when you read interviews, all of the ‘greats’ will admit it. He’s played with Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin and others if a pedigree is needed. And his tone, phrasing and playing are absolutely wicked, maybe better than SRV. Not bad for a guy who just wants to lay low and jam with friends.
Ultimately, it’s too hard to call. Satriani, Vai, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Vivian Campbell, Jimmy Page, Santana, Schon, Mustaine, Iommi, Hammet, Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Slash, Ace Frehley, Buddy Guy, BB King, David Gilmour, Scott Ian, and so many others may deserve it more than these three, but hey, people have different preferences.
February 24th, 2007 at 3:56 pm
I would just like to thank Mr. Phenomenal for stating that Kenny Wayne Shepard should be talked about in this convo regarding guitar greats of today. The blues that KWS plays sounds very similar to that played by Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’m pretty sure that SRV is considered to be a ‘Guitar God’ by most if not The One. If you have any doubts just go buy one of his cd’s. Any of his cds will due because they are all great pieces of work. He has been making music that will be around for generations. ALL of his work is amazing unlike a lot of bands that are out there today. I guess to be recognized by Rolling Stone you have to be on MTV’s TRL show or just completely sell out.

John Mayer jamming to “Wait Until Tomorrow” at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Feb. 22, 2007. Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXEVVGzWKyc
Mayer is really a Guitar God and this video above proves it.
February 25th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
eric krasno anyone??? from soulive?
February 26th, 2007 at 4:21 am
Ian Moore.
February 26th, 2007 at 5:10 am
I appreciate your article, but Derek Trucks has more soul I think than any other musician, let alone guitar player, I’ve ever seen. It’s nothing short of extraordinary.
Obviously you’ve either never listened to him, or don’t have much taste.
take care
Luke
February 26th, 2007 at 8:05 am
Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Jimmy Herring, Jake Cinniger, and oh yeah… Trey Anastasio. Plenty more not mentioned, but these are true guitar gods.
February 26th, 2007 at 8:11 am
Not2Fan has said it completely. I would definately agree with the 6 he has up there I would also add in Al Schnier and you said no Jazz but John Scofield is absolutley amazing. Also Eric Krasno. Wow is amazing
February 26th, 2007 at 9:43 am
Anyone who cares at all about guitar playing should already know about Steve Sweney, living legend in Columbus, Ohio. The band is ekoostik hookah. Website is ekoostik.com. Give a listen when they come to your town . . .
Trey Anastasio is of course awesome, and so are a few of the others named, but this guy (Sweney) can simply abuse a guitar . . .
February 26th, 2007 at 10:25 am
Jake Cinninger from Umphrey’s McGee hands down the biggest guitar god on the touring scene right now.
February 26th, 2007 at 10:42 am
i see a few votes for Trey Anastasio…i completely agree. the man has been melting faces since the early 80’s. and lately he has seemed to get back on track with his own solo band. he tried some different stuff the past few years, and it didnt really work out. but his latest live shows have brought back some much needed energy.
Jimmy Herring’s work with The Aquarium Rescue Unit/Jazz is Dead, is up there.
i didnt see any votes for Ronnie Earl, of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters…check this cat out. very cool stuff.
Neil Young is still ripping shit up, saw a CSN&Y show last summer, and was blown away with the energy, and musicianship.
personally i dont think that john frusciante is all that good….and you are basing his talent on album sales, and show attendence….well if my band had the promotional power as the RHCP, we would be influential too. John Mayer, can play, but its simply recycled SRV stuff…however derek trucks is the only one of the three mentioned that really has any personal style and influence. his combonation of indian rhythms, latin rhythms, rock, jazz and blues, is totally mindboggling, and very satisfying at the same time.
check out some of the derek trucks band records, and his work with the allmans, and you will be happily surprised.
February 26th, 2007 at 10:45 am
I’m sure no one will agree but here’s mine: Mike McCready, Jack White, Slash and James Iha
February 26th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
As fa as I’m concerned, Derek Trucks is the only guitarist in the feature that belongs there. His unique work is shown in Derek Truck’s Band’s most recent release “Songlines.” Granted, the other two are talented, but there are certainly more worthy candidates that will go down in history for their shredding abilities.
Trey anastasio
Sure, Phish is broken up, but Trey continues to keep the wheels spinning, and he keeps experimenting. Afterall, Hendrix dismantled the Experience and got into the more jam heavy Band of Gypsys. Clapton strayed from several of his experiments, and Gracia experimented outside Grateful Dead. Anastasio was recently indicted for drug posession, including heroin. However, it is not that aspect of Jimi or Jerry that we’ll remember, but rather, like Trey, their amazing talent and furthermore, like Hendrix and Garcia, his contributions to the creation of a counterculture.
He is truly a deified guitarist.
February 26th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
one of the best guitar players i ever heard was Bobby Browning of Middlesboro,Ky…he played the Chet Adkins style of Guitar..Played with Billy Walker (country)…last heard from was living in nashville,tenn..some one around Monroe must have heard him play..Jac Kelly. Florida
February 26th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
trey gets my vote. granted, he is no longer playing with phish and his solo stuff has kinda been off the mark, but listen to any trey solo from ‘92-’97 and you hear clapon, page, hendrix, garcia, and zappa all rolled into one (im not saying that trey is better than those guys, im saying you can hear where his influences came from)!
i would also extend a warm handshake to jim james of my morning jacket. that band creates a sound unlike any i have ever heard. a truly great band and a truly great sound.
i also have much, much respect for frusciante. i saw him twice this past year and each time i saw him i felt blessed to be in the presence of rock and roll greatness!
February 26th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Ahem…Joe Satriani…good call….
I think a huge problem with modern music listeners is music has become less and less a cultural (or counter-cultural) centrifugal force and even rebellious music is plugged by mainstream, globalized consumer culture. So a plethora of friggin’ amazing, awesome guitarists in the jazz, jam-band scenes, (among others I’m sure but those are the two scenes I’m deeply engrained in) are overlooked. Here’s a list of ridiculously talented, creative, and awe-inspiring modern guitarists:
1. Steve Kimock (Zero, Steve Kimock Band)
2. Buckethead
3. Jake Cinninger-Brennan Bayliss (Umphrey’s McGee)
4. Jimmy Herring (Allman Brothers, Aquariam rescue Unit, Currently, Panic)
5. Michael Houser (Formerly of Widespread Panic, Deceased)
6. Brock Butler (Perpetual Groove)
7. Keller Williams
8. John Scofield
9. Eric Krasno (Soulive)
10. Trey Anastasio (Phish)
11. Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident)
12. Tim Reynolds
13. Adam Aijala (Yonder Mountain String Band)
14. Sam Holt (Outformation)
15. Drew Heller (Toubab Krewe)
February 26th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
o, not2fan and will and all the others giving shout outs to cinninger and herring and those guys….good call for sure, “jam” music is greatly underappreciated by “the music industry” and the average music consumer, some folks I talk to, it’s like they don’t even realize there’s music out there that’s this inventive post-1975 and are amazed when they hear it…or…it’s like they honestly are not movedby, interested in, awed by, or enjoying what they’re hearing and man…I just don’t get it…it’s really hard for me to respect “diversity of taste” when somebody thinks jack white (and I really dig the white stripes don’t get me wrong) is one of the “top 20″ guitar gods of modern music. people should really make a distinction between being a great artist and a being a great musician. art is pretty much totally subjective, but there’s definately a degree of objectivity to making a statement such as “guitar god” and I really think anyone mentioned by some of the folks in the last dozen or so posts really deserves to be on that list before 95% of the people up there
February 26th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
I don’t like John Mayers pop either but when he wants to play music with some life and energy he does it with the best of them. He can play guitar and when he is not playing the bubble gum stuff he is great.
The best guy out there is Warren Haynes with out a doubt. I would put Derek Trucks right there as well. Steve Kimock, Tim Reynolds as well…
February 26th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Frusciante is a musical genius! Not only does he record great music, put on a great live show and write a lot he also expresses a great knowledge and appreciation for musicians that have come before him. And certainly he would never try to undercut how good the likes of Hendrix, Garcia etc. were. I think its a shame that someone would write an article saying that he didn’t belong on the cover. True maybe Hendrix would have never posed like Frusciante did on the cover of Rolling Stone but doesn’t that imply a certain kind of playfulness on part of these three artists. Maybe there saying were not Hendrix but were still pretty good!
ps good music transcends technical ability everyday of the week and in all honesty I listen to more Frusciante than Hendrix, Garcia and Harrison combined!
February 26th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
oh and please explain why jazz guitarists aren’t allowed
February 27th, 2007 at 5:03 am
Cal…because by virtue of the msuc, all jazz musicians are great that’s a given…they’re in a legue of their own!
February 27th, 2007 at 9:00 am
I think Derek is the only one to belong on the list that Rolling Stones put out I have seen him live multiple times and he is just amazing.
Others to list would be Warren Haynes (my favorite), Trey Anastasio, Buckethead, Keller Williams to name a few. The “Jam” scene has alot of impressive musicians who are not getting the rightful respect they deserve.
February 27th, 2007 at 9:52 am
Mayer a guitar god…….. if thats the truth please send me straight to hell right now. No trey, who is easily the best living guitarist just ask clapton he agrees…… keith richards never was a guitar god and as far as the chili peppers guy goes he is sick no doubt but a god……………..
February 27th, 2007 at 10:07 am
F-ing Trey!!!! Although some post phish momments have lacked the sound many of us became devoted to he has been able make his imprint on modern music and develop a unique sound. Too bad many people out there fail to see him than anything else than the guy who took over the circus post j. garcia.
February 27th, 2007 at 10:33 am
derek trucks is an absolute monster, listen to his soul serenade album or the allman ’s beacon dvd, of course warren haynes, jimmy herring
February 27th, 2007 at 11:12 am
Warren Haynes is a beast.
February 27th, 2007 at 11:18 am

the kid is a young freak
February 27th, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Nils Cline in Wilco is a grand master Wizard! His solos are so beautific and full of melody and a edgy energy. My current favorite.
Big Head Todd is another guitarist that deserves a lot of notice. I remember watching him in concert thinking “Ok, now how is he going to top the last solo from the previous song” … and then he would.
Jimmy Herring from ARU and Phil Lesh’s band is another Wizard, a little light on melody sometimes, but still an amazing guitarist. I always enjoyed watching him just smoke Warren Haynes under the table. I do not understand how anyone can find Haynes to be even barely tolerable! Perhaps one of the worst musicans I have ever seen live (besides the Smashing Pumpkins!).
Mike McCready from Pearl Jam was an incredable guitarist as are the guys from Build to Spill & BMRC. Though responsble for a lot of bad music in the last couple of years, Trey during the Phish years could really rock star it up at times.
There are still Guitar Gods out there, you just got to look around.
John Cippolina Forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 27th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
Jake Cinninger from Umphrey’s McGee…hands down. Also I would include Trey Anastasio, Jon Scofield, and Robert Randolph.
February 27th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
phil campbell from motorhead
fast eddie clark from motorhead
hands down
everybody else, sit down
February 27th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

February 27th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Richard Thompson–duh!
Jon Gutwillig–The Disco Biscuits
Josh Clark–Tea Leaf Green
Chris Machetti–RAQ
Jimmy Herring–Widespread Panic, ARU, The Dead, Phil Lesh, Jazz is Dead
Jake Cinninger–Umphrey’s McGee
Scott Metzger–Particle
Larry Campbell–Bob Dylan, Phil and Friends
Trey Anastasio–when he was in Phish anyway
February 27th, 2007 at 3:43 pm

February 27th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Luther Dickinson has my vote, all the way.
(In case that HTML won’t work, Check our Luther Dickinson on any North Mississippi All Stars album.)
February 28th, 2007 at 9:21 am
Matt N…jon Gutwillig? are you serious? He is the epidome of mud! and Scott Metzger isn’t in Particle anymore.
February 28th, 2007 at 10:57 am
Les Claypool is by far the modern-day virtuoso.
February 28th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Les isnt a guitar player
March 1st, 2007 at 5:00 am
Hey, I totally forgot about this one, and it’s a good thing I remembered, because we need some female’s in here. Susan Tedecshi. I remember the first time I saw her, maybe 5 years back she performed on Farm Aid. That chick rocks! She is one helluva blues guitarist.
March 1st, 2007 at 5:42 am
Speaking of women guitarists, Bonnie Raitt plays a mean slide.
March 1st, 2007 at 11:38 am
YES SHE DOES, BUT BONNIE RAIT I ALREADY THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF BLUES GUITAR! (UNFORTUNATELY BECAUSE IN HER PRIME, SHE WAS THE ONLY MAINSTREAM FEMALE GUITAR GODDESS). SHE STILL KICKS BUTT THOUGH!!!
March 1st, 2007 at 1:50 pm
Derek Trucks most definitely belongs on the list, as well as:
Luther Dickenson of NMA
George McConnell (I’m sorry he kicks ass, and all you haters treated him wrong)!!!!!
Buckethead
Bobby Lee Rodgers (the Codetalkers) - plays rhythm and lead at once
Satriani
Trey
Jimmy Herring
Warren Haynes
Johnny Lang
And I play the meanest Air Guitar out there!!!!!
As much as I love the disco biscuits, Gutlwig is not even close!!!!!
And whoever put Claypool, he plays bass!
March 3rd, 2007 at 11:06 am
just for the record…a bass IS a guitar. It’s no different. I play guitar AND bass…I know! If it looks like a guitar, and it plays like a guitar….it must be a guitar! i can name bassists that will blow the faces off most the guitarists listed! Wait a minute, i already did…
March 4th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Has anyone mentioned Brian May?
March 5th, 2007 at 2:15 am
Believe me DJ, Brian May has long-been considered a certifiable ROCK GUITAR GOD! He is easily in the old Hendrix/Clapton group. If he’s not concidered a GOD then we can throw this whole list out the window.
March 5th, 2007 at 11:17 am
I have to throw my vote in for Trey Anastasio. He is technically astounding as well as being soulful and powerful. Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss from Umphrey’s Mcgee are two guys that can absolutely shred. These are just a few. I would need at least 2 hours to finish my list so i’ll just stop it here. KEEP ROCK AND ROLL ALIVE!!!!

Great article! I have to say I have a favorite and it would be Robin Trower. If this guy is still out their he is a must see! The talent is undeniable. When I last saw Trower live (about four years ago) it was mesmorizing!!!!

Just for the record, I admire Derek Trucks, John Mayer and John Frusciante. I’m glad these guys are out there and getting noticed and I hope they keep doing their thing for many more years. For my money, out all of them, Trucks is the cream of the crop. Many of the comments referenced older guitarists (Brian May or Robin Trower) who are still out there plying their trade.
My original intention was to spark a discussion about who is out on the horizon now that might be potential replacements for those aging guitar icons.
I appreciate everyone participating and welcome your comments. Obviously there is no shortage of candidates.
btw…the reason I asked readers not to include jazz guitarists wasn’t out of disrespect, but I thought of it as quite a different genre and that those artists should be a topic for a future blog…hmmm
