“Rock” and “Doc” Rhyme

Music lovers are often movie lovers. What’s better than movies about music? Nothing.

Be Here to Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt- I caught this on Sundance a few months ago. Any fan of Van Zandt can tell that he was a bit depressed. This moving portrait fills in some of the gaps and explains the suffering that he had to go through.

Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns- From arthouse to playhouse They Might Be Giants have been entertaining fans of all ages for the past two decades. This film features cameos from other famous New Yorkers reading spoken word versions of TMBG classics. It’s surprisingly inciteful and well-paced.

DIG!-Explores the love/hate relationship between the indiest of indie rockers Brian Jonestown Massacre and the somewhat less indie-credible The Dandy Warhols. It’s full of sniping and snobbery. As guilty a pleasure as you will find in this genre.

There are others not mentioned. As always feel free to toss in your two cents.

I have purchased “Fallen Angel,” which is about Gram Parsons, but have not yet watched it.

I am in the middle of watching “I am trying to break your heart,” the Wilco documentary. I recommend this one from what I have seen thus far.

Psst: All of the above films (save Gigantic) and plenty of other rock docs are available for borrowing from the Monroe County Library System.
