Who would you vote into the Hall?

This year’s nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced (drum roll please Mr. Moon), they are: Madonna, The Ventures, The Dave Clark Five, Leonard Cohen, Chic, John Mellencamp, Donna Summer, the Beastie boys and Afrika Bambaataa. To be eligible, the nominees would have had to release their first single no later than 1982.

At this point, most of the obvious choices have been inducted so now we’re getting into the early eighties music scene (yawn), and the leftovers from the sixties and seventies. All of these current artists certainly qualify or they wouldn’t have been nominated, but if I had to pick someone, I would be pulling for Leonard Cohen (who writes the best depressing songs that every artist wants to cover) and the Ventures (the 60s guitar nerds who wrote tunes so cool they didn’t need vocals). Okay and maybe John Mellencamp, as long as he doesn’t play “Little Pink Houses,” if he gets inducted.

I’d be interested in hearing who you think is worthy to be added to the Hall for 2008 or if you think that there’s a deserving artist who’s been overlooked let me know.

Btw…Why in the hell were the Stooges overlooked again this year? They got robbed last year and weren’t even nominated this year!!! Might as well tune into Partridge Family reruns (they haven’t been nominated yet, have they?)

I count three BlogsMonroe sites that’ve posted the Rock Hall nominees thus far; if Pacer Chick admits her ticker lub-dubs to “Good Times,” we may have a new record–the Hawaii retirement conference debacle caused crickets to chirp in the background of three, too, I believe.

P.S. The Partridge Family did indeed rock. “Point Me In the Direction of Albuquerque” is a better jam than “Pink Houses.”

Must be a slow news week. Other than Cohen, this year’s lineup is barely worth noting, which makes the Stooges omission all the more puzzling. There must be more viable candidates than this feeble list. Are they compelled to induct someone every year? Of course, I’m probably more purist than most and don’t consider Madonna, Donna Summer and Chic as rock music. Disco was what a lot of rock bands were railing against in the 70s and 80s.

I agree with your picks: cohen and the ventures. I believe, however, that the “coug” only belongs in the rock and roll hall of fame when he drives to cleveland and pays admission. the dave clark five would be my next pick, but i don’t think they are really hall of fame material.

Dave Clark 5 and the ventures definately! WHy are all these bands that have just become eligible getting nominated AND inducted before so many of the greats??? The only one in recent history that has been so quick to be inducted that actually deserved it was Prince. Nobody can beat the tribute to George Harrison that he played on at that years ceremony!!
