Rockers twice as likely to die young

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

According to an article in Weekly magazine, you might want to tell Billy to put down the guitar and pickup a handgun.  Apparently leading the lifestyle of the King can lead to a premature stage exit. After collecting the statistics on 1,064 rock stars, from the 1950s to today, researchers at Liverpool John Moores University concluded that rock stars really do die younger. For American rock stars the death age was 42; for European counterparts it was only 35.

Chief reasons for a visit from the Grim Reaper were extensive partying, plane and bus crashes and mental instability. “We looked at this industry just like any other. When you do that, you  identify what people are most at risk of,” says principal researcher, Mark Bellis. “Some of the key risks are still associated with drug and alcohol use.”

The return of the logo!

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Van Halen have not only brought back Diamond Dave, but they’ve decided to resurrect their original logo (which I think was designed by Mr. Roth himself). It was last used by the band in 1986, having been dropped when Sammy Hagar was enlisted as new singer.

The Detroit Free Press did a short history of rock and roll trademarks including the truth behind the Stones’ famous lips logo, pop culture’s most successful rock icon.

Seizing songs at the border

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Death Cab for Cutie guitarist, Chris Walla had his hard drive confiscated at the Candian border containing four years of master song files for his new solo recording. You can rest more comfortably now knowing that Homeland Security has done it’s part to prevent the subversion of impressionable Amercian ears.

Prodigal Jokes

Due to unforeseen circumstances I haven’t blogged in a while. Jim has threatened to terminate me, and I can only assume he meant removing from the blog, as opposed to Tuhminating me from this plane of existence.

I accidentally paid $29 for the new Radiohead CD last week. Curse the exchange rate and my dyslexic math skills. It’s good though,. so I’m fine with that.

My apologies to Nickelback fans, I still don’t like that band. It’s my thing, not theirs. I just have this hang up about bearded Canadians. Red Green excepted, of course. I’m obviously kidding, Nickelback is actually very boring.

Can you get fired for posting at work if your work is supporting your blog? I don’t want to find out. See you in three weeks.

The Tom Tom Club’s Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, who made their name as the rhythm section in Talking Heads, will celebrate the holidays by releasing a limited edition 7″ vinyl and 4-track CD single titled Misteltunes. The disc’s opening track, “Christmas in the Club,” is described as “a dance floor stomper with vocoder and sleigh bells alternating between Chris’ and Tina’s vocals.” Misteltunes will be released on November 15 on La La Land Records, run by the Tom Tom Club’s former merchandising crew. The set will be available exclusively for pre-order at www.tomtomclub.net .  It will also be made available at select independent record stores.

More music at the movies

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

2007 is shaping up to be a big year for films about or inspired by musical themes. Peter Bogdonavich just debuted a new documentary this week on Tom Petty called “Runnin’ Down a Dream” at the New York Film Festival (hear that Phoenix Cinemas?). The same festival also saw the debut of a new documentary on Bob Dylan, “The Other Side of the Mirror” which will soon be followed by “I’m Not There” a strange celluloid tribute to Mr. Zimmerman featuring six different actors doing their take on old blue eyes. “Across the Universe” a film loosely based on the Beatles songbook, came and went this summer and “Once,” a film about two songwriters in love is still gathering great reviews (and probably playing somewhere in Ann Arbor).

For 2008: Martin Scorsese who will release a much-anticipated documentary on the Stones has announced plans to do a film on the life of George Harrison.
