First Meal

After 36 hours of not eating, I was starving, of course.  It was 4pm and I literally dragged my fiance out for dinner.  Poor guy works midnights so it was really his breakfast and I was really serious about eating something good.  Where did we turn to? Michigan Bar and Grill, of course!

When we were first thinking about moving to Monroe and came down here to take a look-see, we stopped there for lunch and were in complete shock that for $12, we both had HUGE lunches with enough to take home for another meal.  Still the same shock – it’s never one meal we go there for but 2, one to eat there and the other for our next lunch.  Sure it’s not always the speediest place to go but their food is great and very plentiful, just like Pete’s Garage.  Definitely our favorite two local places.  We’ve also liked Monroe Street Grill and Vaqueros (though we didn’t know it was a semi-chain) and are looking for other local eateries to try.  Suggestions?

One that’s farily hidden; Blaze’s Diner, on Douglas south of Sterns, almost to the state line. It’s one of our regular stops. Look for the front half of #53 himself, Herbie, The Love Bug, sitting on the lawn under the sign.

In case you haven’t heard Jefana’s is opening soon. It’s downtown next to Zorba’s. He’s keeping prices reasonable and the food is supposed to be very good. I don’t know exactly when they are opening but it’s soon, so keep a look out!

Herbie! I’m sold. What kind of food does Jefana’s have?

I haven’t seen a menu but on the window it says Seafood, Steaks, and Live Music. Oh and I noticed on Saturday night that they were open this weekend.

If you like Italian, you can’t beat Detroit Beach Pizzaria. Family owned and operated since the 60’s

La Fiesta is another local place that has good food at low prices. If you go before 6pm they have drink specials.
I am going to Jefana’s this week to check it out. It will be nice to have a two places(including Monroe Street Grille) downtown to eat nice sit down meals. Another place that has turned it around since new owners have taken over is McGeedy’s. They have lowered their prices and have good burgers. I like the downtowner, it has olives and banana peppers. They also serve Bell’s( a great michigan beer) not on draft though you have to go to 129 for that.

Great suggetion by EL, it is true you can’t beat DBC.

Cafe Classics is awesome for a lite dinner and live entertainment. My wife and I go there all the time on weekends. They have local bands which is awesome! Their reuben is the best I’ve ever had and the soup is good too. They have lots of deserts and the best frozen capucino. It’s another great downtown Monroe business.
