Downtown Dundee - been there?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Today was my first day back at work. Inevitably the topic of Craft 2000 came up as it always does - don’t ask why. But no one ever says anything other than the fact they love that store…until today. My friend Becky said she makes a day of a trip down here. They go to Craft 2000, the mall, then head over to downtown Dundee and of course, Cabela’s. I didn’t know Dundee had a downtown, let alone one she said is very cute! Maybe we’ll go check it out this weekend…after all, we have lived here over a year and haven’t yet made it out to Cabela’s. Suggestions are welcome.

For other AT&T customers, they claim they are working on the tower. It should have been up by yesterday according to the representative I spoke with. I guess it could be worse, let’s just hope no one has a genuine emergency here in Monroe and needs to call for help from an AT&T phone!

I drove through downtown yesterday and boy, was it worse than I expected! I barely could find a way back to Detroit Beach, I almost had to go up Telegraph to Hurd. Power lines were down, houses were in chaos, trees were across the road, etc. I hope everything is settled soon and am thankful no one lost their lives or were hurt.

power, power, POWER!

It was bound to happen.  I think we’ve had at least 7 storms this week and not even once did the power flicker, so we couldn’t complain when we lost power tonight. It, of course, happened to start pouring the second we pulled into the Target parking lot (I called that one) and then we left to go have an unexpected night out (hubby didn’t want to BBQ in the rain and all of our meals consist of SOMETHING grilled) but discovered that Pete’s was out of power. Well, it was flickering and not worth the risk. So we got KFC and headed home.  We took Stewart/Cole/Whatever that street is called and were shocked to see the plethora of trees down by the country club.  Our sub wasn’t so bad but we knew we were in trouble when the lights were out for the gas station and street light.  No power, that’s for sure. It didn’t come back until 11:20 so it was longer than most times, and the entire sub was out. No real damage around here save one large tree in the middle of the road which the fire department kindly moved.

When I called hubby to complain that I was bored and not sleepy, he told me Monroe was all over the news. In Toledo! Guess downtown was hit harder than any other area. Makes me thankful we didn’t lose anything.  A coworker of Ryan’s also has made us particularly thankful for our flood insurance since he lives in Findley and lost EVERYTHING, the poor man. And of course he wasn’t in a flood zone like we are so his insurance company won’t cover a thing. I’m definitely going to sleep easier at night knowning we’re pretty much fully covered…but I still feel horrible for the Findley families, and downtown Monroe.
