Apparently, we just can’t get enough of going to splash parks because that’s what we did for Memorial Day — we enjoyed Dundee’s latest attraction. Caitlyn had a free pass to the park that she got for participating in Dundee Library’s summer reading program last year so we went.
Since we recently went to the splash park in Frankenmuth, we were immediately comparing the two places. While Dundee’s RiverRun was a good time, we all agreed that we enjoyed Zehnder’s Splash Village a bit more. The main difference was that there would have been nothing for Keegan to enjoy at RiverRun (he got to spend the day with Grandma and Papa while we took Caitlyn).
In a previous post I mentioned how much Keegan enjoyed the water jumparoos at Splash Village, but there wasn’t anything comparable at RiverRun. Its “small child area” consisted of two tiny water slides, a water sprinkler and some water chutes where the kids can direct the flow of water. All this is contained in a very shallow pool area. The best Keegan could have done was just sat in the water and splashed and he could do that just as easily at home in the bathtub for free!
The giant water tubes at RiverRun were much fun, but I discovered once I climbed all the way to the top with Caitlyn that I wasn’t allowed to hold her on my lap with a single tube. You had to use the double tubes. Caitlyn was tall enough to ride in the double tube but I was very worried about her falling off the front, especially since the first time we went down the slide we had a tube that had no bottom to the front half and she was trying very hard to keep her legs up and not fall through the hole. (This was before we realized that they had tubes with bottoms………)
One thing that could have been improved was the “lazy river” that you can float around in circles on a tube. At Splash Village you shoot out of the giant tubes and immediately drift right into the river. At RiverRun you have to exit the pool as soon as you get out of the tubes and then walk over to the river — it kinda kills the momentum. Also, the river has a rip tide pull to it, so the minute you move off the steps you are pulled to the left and away you go. The only problem with this is if you don’t have an inner tube with you the you may get run over by people who do have tubes.
I highly recommend using a tube there because the water isn’t that deep. If you want to do anything other than walk around the river you must be careful for your knees and legs because the bottom of the river is concrete and will leave you sore and maybe even scraped up a bit.
As to the other part of the water park, we all enjoyed the play fort area with buckets of dumping water, more tube slides and puddles galore. Dave and Caitlyn splashed around there for a bit while I enjoyed the adult-only hot tub area. Ahhhh, very relaxing in its cave-like setting. As long as I knew that Caitlyn was with her daddy I could kick back and enjoy the hot tub without worrying about the fact that I couldn’t see her from the cave.
And for the kids who want to enjoy the water jets and bubbles, RiverRun has a family hot tub area sectioned off in the middle of the river area. The water isn’t hot at all (which is a plus for families with little ones) and it is plenty big enough that many families can enjoy it at the same time without bumping into each other.
They also have an arcade (which we just walked through since we weren’t carrying any cash in our swimsuits) and an eating area. The only thing I would recommend would be more seating along the wall in front of the arcade in case people would like to take a break or just watch their kids play. The only place to sit on the downstairs level is in the eatery area and the only thing you really can see from there is the kiddie pool.
Overall, RiverRun is a fun water park and a good way to spend a free day. I give this splash park three and a half stars on the mommy meter.
