Breaking News: Internet Catching On

WASHINGTON (AP) — Luring new readers means connecting with them on the Internet through blogs, live online chats and interactive databases, industry leaders told newspaper editors Thursday.  Amid a steady decline in newspaper advertising and circulation, building communities of readers through the online experience is essential, said Jim Brady, vice president and executive editor of washingtonpost.com.

I hope I am not the last person on earth to have a great appreciation for the comfortable feeling of coming home from work, taking my shoes off, stretching out in my La-Z-Boy and enjoying one of the few remaining afternoon newspapers, the Monroe Evening News. The feeling of the newsprint in my hands instead of a plastic mouse, scanning the headlines rather than clicking on links, reading the ads, doing the crossword puzzle with an actual pencil, checking the court news and the obits, learning what’s new in Tom Treece’s richly blessed life, and finding out what Nancy and Sluggo are up to. There’s nothing like it, and a computer can never replace it!

Then again, now that Treece has moved to Monroe and is practically my neighbor, and Nancy and Sluggo are online every day, http://www.comics.com/comics/nancy/
maybe I will have to cancel my subscription. (Just kidding!)
