Another round of power outages 6/28

By Paula Wethington / paula@monroenews.com

There is another round of power outages this morning, most likely weather-related.

Monroe County Central Dispatch has received reports of outages on the east side of Monroe and along the Dixie Hwy. area. That coincides with where I saw power out this morning in northeast Monroe.

Dispatchers also have reports of power outages in the Summerfield-Ida West area.

DTE Energy has an outage map by zip code in pdf format that, as of 6:45 a.m. today, is showing current outages in the 48162 (north Monroe) and 48166 (Newport) zip codes.

Feel free to chime in here or on MonroeTalks as to where else you’ve noticed electrical problems today.

Robots watching robots

By Paula Wethington / paula@monroenews.com

In Saturday’s edition of The Monroe Evening News, there will be a story and at least one photo of the Monroe Advanced Robotics Competition taking place at Monroe High School.

Now while the story does focus on what’s taking place at the high school and why, there also was a very clever publicity event scheduled at the Phoenix Theater at Frenchtown Square mall.

You see, there’s this new movie called WALL*E, a Disney-Pixar science fiction film that stars a robot who goes about his tasks on Earth, when he meets and falls in love with another robot.

And the press release that was sent to The Monroe Evening News explained this publicity tie-in. The robotics teams participating in Monroe were invited to “bring their robot to the movies” for a special screening. The plans included reserved seating up front for the robots, while their team members / handlers / students enjoyed the show. And a concession stand display was intended for the robots, with bolts and batteries such as they might prefer in lieu of popcorn and soft drinks.

Now, I don’t know who thought up that idea, because a similar publicity event also was scheduled at Phoenix Theater in Farmington Hills.

But it was a very clever concept to cross-promote the student contest and the movie!

Fremont, Ohio, plane crash has Michigan connection

By Paula Wethington / paula@monroenews.com

One week ago today, a pancake breakfast was taking place at Fremont Progress Airport in Fremont, Ohio; which is about an hour away from Monroe, Mich. Airport owner Gene Damschroder was giving airplane rides during the pancake breakfast. The plane crashed on one of those flights, killing him and five passengers.

There was a photo and AP story in Monday’s edition of The Monroe Evening News about the wreck. Many of you also got the headlines from Toledo, Ohio, media that day and during the week. I’ve been told it hit the national wires within hours that day.

Here’s a detail that I only recently caught – plane crash victim Matt Clearman, who recently lived in Maumee, Ohio, was previously from Livonia, Mich., and has been buried in Redford Township. See story in The News-Messenger, Fremont, Ohio.

Some of you know that I grew up in Fremont and worked at The News-Messenger and its sister paper, the News Herald in Port Clinton, Ohio, before arriving at The Monroe Evening News.

That being said, I didn’t have any personal stories to tell about Gene and the other plane victims. I knew many people who had worked with Gene or met him over the years, but had no personal stories to the discussion when the accident got news attention locally. Besides, stormy weather and lengthy power outages quickly became the news of the week here in Michigan.

But I spent the day in Fremont yesterday visiting family. The exit to get off the bypass to my parents’ home is right by the airport.

And here are some tidbits I can share:

  • My parents live close enough to the airport that they do hear the planes buzzing in and out. Somehow, the crash itself didn’t get their attention – they learned about it on Toledo TV. When my mother had a chance to go look for the crash site, she realized it was only two blocks of her home. It was one of the few open spaces where Gene could have tried to land a plane in distress, and my mom’s theory is, that as an experienced pilot, that’s where he was aiming.
  • My mother hosted a garage sale yesterday and I helped her staff the sale. One of the customers started talking to us about the disaster because of how close we were to the crash site. The man told us his family had attended the pancake breakfast. He had sent his children up on Gene’s plane for rides, and they were the flight just before the fatal crash. “Fifteen more minutes, and I’d be burying a child myself,” he said.
  • A Facebook group has been created in memory of the Fremont plane crash victims.
  • And if you’re interested in following the stories about the plane crash, the reader forums and photos, do check out what The News-Messenger has posted on its web site. It’s a Monday-Saturday newspaper, with a newsroom staff much smaller than we have at The Monroe Evening News. While the N-M had a definite disadvantage on Sunday afternoon competing with the Toledo media for initial coverage, the staff has more than made up for its initial limitations by staying on the story all week. For example, my former boss, now retired N-M editor Roy Wilhelm, wrote about how Gene always had something to say about planes in the news, and what it was like to cover another fatal crash years ago at the airport.

MEN breaking news clip

Here is the Breaking News clip posted this morning at monroenews.com.

A powerful thunderstorm raced through Monroe County Monday night, causing power outtages, more downed tree limbs and a host of other problems.

The power outages were still in effect for many this morning, especially in south county. The busy Sterns-Secor Rd. intersection, for example, had only portable stop signs up at 6 a.m. and all of the area businesses were shuttered due to the the lack of power.

Homes in that area were also without electricity.

The storm began around 7:30 p.m. near the state line and was in the Monroe area about the same time. At least two house fires were reported, one in the City of Monroe and one in Frenchtown Township.

Severe thunderstorm warning 6/10 3:25 a.m.

By Paula Wethington / paula@monroenews.com

The National Weather Service in Detroit has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Monroe County, Mich., at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday June 10. I can see lightning in the west.

In the meantime, still no power at my house on northeast side of Monroe … brownout conditions since 8:30 p.m. Our police scanner batteries are running down – the warning beeps woke me up. So I plugged the unit back in so it can soak up whatever electricity is there. Although we have a rechargeable battery system, that radio is self-contained and when it runs out, it’s off. (We ran into same situation during great blackout of August 2003).

Our bigger concern at this point is the refrigerator and the sump pump. It’s one thing to be out of power for a couple hours; totally a different situation when you start reaching several hours.

One of our neighbors has a generator, so my husband was confused when he got home from work late last night and saw some lights on next door. He soon realized we’ve got limited power.

My husband also noticed some of the blocked roads in the area.

I’m wondering what the downtown area will be like. The Monroe Evening News has dealt with power outages before. We can handle them a lot better at the downtown office (newsroom) than we can at distribution / printing center on Huber Dr.

Damage report 6/9 9:47 p.m.

By Paula Wethington / paula@monroenews.com

Well, let’s see how long I can keep an Internet connection going this time. I did lose connection at one point. It’s really, really dark with just a camping light and a laptop computer on in the house. I will need to get some more D batteries when this is all done with (yes I’m going to look in the sales fliers and will post what I find at Monroe on a Budget)

A couple of my neighbors in Monroe have decided to start bailing out their sump pumps with buckets – great idea, but I couldn’t figure out how to take the lid off my pump. I did peek in the pump and see that while the water is high, it’s OK for now.

I imagine some of us neighbors will be going to the hardware store in the next few days for battery backups to the sumps. You see, I’m in a neighborhood that didn’t lose power during the August 2003 power outage; although the neighborhood my husband and I lived in at the time did lose power for several hours. So it’s just not something that is a common enough situation for our current neighbors to think about it.

I have, however, unplugged or turned off anything else I can think of. When there’s enough power to run the sump, I want it to run the sump.

And for whatever it’s worth, I did go through the power outage voice mail at DTE Energy to make the official report.

Some of what I’m hearing on the radio this hour:

  • Transformer on fire on Bay View St. near Glenwood in Monroe.
  • 2100 block of Sterns Rd., wires down.
  • Tree on fire at Dunbar and Keegan.
  • 1000 block of W. Front St. near Kaye Lani Dr., Monroe, wires down.
  • Tree down in 4100 block of E. Dunbar Rd.
  • 200 block of Rabbit Run, Ash Township, fire department called to check on that house.
  • Wires down in 600 and 700 block of Kentucky Ave. in Monroe.

National Weather Service in Detroit also has posted on its site “multiple trees blown down” in Monroe; a truck that was blown off I-75 near Exit 16; and several trees down in “downtown” Petersburg.
