Mayflies are back in town

Filed under: Environment, Random things |

The Lake Erie mayflies are making their annual visit.

I saw several mayflies this morning in downtown Monroe.

Hi Paula!

I was at the Erie State Game Area last week near the Whiting Power Plant and the mayfly level was just starting to get uncomfortable in the woods. I probably had ten or 15 consistently on me during that section of my hike. So, I headed out to an open prairie area and lost ‘em.

It’s really funny, though, how much it’s mind over matter. They don’t bite, so having a few hangers-on is not a problem. Just don’t panic. But I’ve literally hiked through clouds of the things before and they start to get in your mouth and hair. That’s when it gets nasty.

I remember eight or nine years ago driving through a swam of them on Luna Pier Rd. near I-75.

One or two mayflies at a time, they’re cute.

But swarms are not fun.

Are you still seeing them? How funny.

I didn’t notice as many in downtown Monroe this summer.
