Feb. 26: winter weather advisory

The National Weather Service in Detroit has officially issued a winter weather advisory for Monroe County, Mich., as of 3:49 p.m. Friday Feb. 26.

This is probably to no surprise to those of us who have been watching the snow fall all day. However, Monroe is predicted to get another 1 to 3 inches tonight with blowing and drifting snow.

Snow cancellation: “Building Brains” parent workshop

Because of snow, the Great Start Collaborative of Monroe County has announced it has canceled the Building Brains, Building Futures parent workshop that was to be held 6 p.m. tonight (Friday Feb. 26) at the Monroe County Intermediate School District, 1101 S. Raisinville Rd.

“It is obvious that we have a lot of interest in this topic and we will be rescheduling this event ASAP,” the Great Start office office said in its e-mail announcement this afternoon.

Fewer crashes

The trouble spot right now is southbound I-75 between the 15 and 20 mile markers. Cars hit guard rails there, but dispatchers say most of the accidents have been cleared up. Earlier, with the sleet, cars were sliding in ditches off Blue Bush, Doty and Dunbar Rds. Dispatchers said I-75 was worse than US-23 for some reason.

Winter storm watch in effect for Monday Feb. 22

The National Weather Service in Detroit has issued a winter storm watch for Monroe County, Mich., going into effect late tonight Sunday Feb. 21 and continuing to Monday Feb. 22.

The Monday morning and evening rush hours are expected to be messy in southeast Michigan. Current forecasts are calling for 4 to 8 inches of snow.

Snowfall totals for southeast Michigan

The National Weather Service in Detroit has posted a map and chart listing snowfall totals for southeast Michigan on Feb. 9 and 10.

Monroe County amounts ranged from about 8 to 10 inches.

Monroe Public Schools has posted closing for Thursday

All Monroe Public and parochial schools are cancelled for Thursday, February 11. Due to that cancellation, there will be no Kid’s Club for Thursday, February 11. Once again, school is cancelled for Thursday, February 11, for all Monroe Public and parochial schools. Now just a reminder to Monroe Public Schools parents – there will be no school for Monroe Public Schools students on Friday, February 12, and Monday, February 15, for the district’s winter break and President’s Day. In addition, there is no school for Monroe Public Schools students on Tuesday, February 16, due to an all-day teacher in-service. So we look forward to seeing all of our students back in class on Wednesday, February 17.
