My entre into the fast paced world of blogging!

Wow!

It’s amazing to me how rapidly the blogging world moves.

To sum it all up… I just met with Dan at the Monroe Evening News yesterday to talk about my blog.  I recieved my password and  got my account set up today and bam!…an announcement about my blog was posted on the Monroe Evening News website today even though I have written nothing yet.

So, I wanted to write something now so as to not leave everyone hanging. This is, of course assuming that all of you blog readers out there are waiting with baited breath for what I have to say. But I won’t flatter myself and make that assumption.

In short, this blog is a chronicle of my ongoing exploration of the cool local things Monroe has to offer.

At this point I’ll leave it at that.  Well..is the suspense killing you?

I look forward to your updates to the local happenings in Monroe. I wish I would have noticed that the Wizard of Oz was playing downtown this weekend. I hope they get a great crowd. A weekly classic movie night would be great at reduced rate ticket prices. A great event to every age.

I was at the Monroe Street Grille the other day and saw the flyer for The Wizard of Oz. I agree. I think they should do this kind of thing more often. What’s a movie you’d like to see there?

There are so many possibilities. The original “Odd Couple”, with Lemmon and Matthau, “The Magnificent Seven”, an independent film I love called “The First Of May”, with Mickey Rooney and Charles Nelson Reilly, “Singin’ In The Rain”, or even a “Three Stooges” marathon with special events within it just for kids. Anyone up for the Beatles in “Yellow Submarine”?

  4. Sarah Nash Says:

Great movie choices. The only one I haven’t heard of is “The First of May” My husband will be excited that you recommended “The Magnificant Seven”

The Three Stooges marathon sounds like a good idea, even though it doesn’t particularly appeal to me. For some reason I’ve found that The Three Stooges usually appeals to men more than women. The idea about interspersing events for kids is great too as long as it doesn’t involve hitting each other over the head with things in the typical Stooge-esqe manner :-)

We actually have Yellow Submarine on DVD hear at home. The best way to is watch it with surround sound because the music and sound effects are amazing. Seeing it on the big screen would be even better!

In college I got to see Casablanca for the first time on the big screen at the Michigan Theater. I also saw Nosferatu (the original Dracula silent film) on the big screen with live organ accompaniment. The Michigan Theater is a good example of how a really cool old theater can draw in a crowd for some phenomenal cinematic experiences.

Thanks for the tip re Monroe’s new sushi bar. I’m intrigued and of course will have to try it soon. I will invite my daughter and son-in-law for a fun evening out.

Thanks MOM in Monroe. If you’re anywhere near as fun and cool as MY MOM, I’m sure your daughter and son in law will have as great time! ;-)

The film is now almost ten years old. Director Paul Sirmons is currently Florida’s Film Commissioner.

Oh, need to add “Arsenic & Old Lace” to my list … ;-)

I went just before Christmas and saw “It’s a wonderful Life” it was my first time seeing the film, it was wonderful to see in on the big screen! Before they started the movie they talked about how they were going to show an old movie once a month this year. They said they were going to start with Casablanca but I guess they decided to start with Wizard of Oz. We didn’t make it friday but I wish we would have been able to. We’ll be going to the February movie (if they have one) for sure!

I read an article the other day about how they are starting to show the NY Metropolitan Opera at the Michigan Theater. Apparently, it’s really good. I know that’s probably a bit high-brow for the RRCA, but its seems kind of interesting to me.

BTW, one of the best area movie deals is the dollar theater at Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor. It’s $1 before 6PM, $1.50 after 6PM and 50 cents on Tuesdays. http://www.teichertheaters.com/briarwood_dollar_movies_4

Also, the Tecumseh Civic Auditorium has occasional movie festivals. http://www.tecumsehcivic.com/default.htm . The Canadian fiddler Natalie McMaster is playing the Civic on March 10 at 7:30PM. It’s $20, but that is going to be a great show.

I would love to have old movies playing in Monroe. It is a totally different experience to see them on the big screen. The Redford Theatre plays old movies and they draw a good crowd.
I would like to see “Yojimbo” ,”Maltese Falcon” or “The Thin Man” besides some of the movies others have already mentioned. Movies that have great locations like “North by Norhtwest” or John Ford westerns would be cool to see on a screen that big. I had never heard of “The First Of May” but any movie with Mickey Rooney AND Charles Nelson Reilly sounds good to me.

Thank to all the people who commented especially Sarah. This is my first time trying this blog thing. So here goes, with a little of everything. I have never been to quote ” a real Sushi Bar” but have tried it at different buffets who offer it in other cities. The experience turned out well except I didn’t know the names of the items I was sampling but I did enjoy it anyway. Thanks Sarah for drawing my attintion to the one at Dolce Vita, will try it. As far as the RRCA, been there a long time ago when Justin Wilson ” Cajun Cook” was there really enjoyed it and bought a book by Justin and had it autographed. When I was growing up RRCA was the Monroe Theatre which I remember going to as a youngster . It would be nice to go again to RRCA with a Movie Film showing. How about “Gone with the Wind” ” An Affair to Remember” just too mention a couple. I have never seen these movies on the big screen and wish RRCA would go for it. The showing of these kinds of films would benefit all age groups as far as diversity in different genre.

    Hey Sarah,

Had no idea you had your own Blog, was looking for other local ones as I’d gotten motivated to create one myself this week and came stumbling upon yours.

Great concept, good posts so far too!
    Keep up the good work!

I’ll definitely link to it though…on my own blog. =)
