Paczkis

A few posts ago I blogged about my desire for a local bakery. Someone responded asking if there was a local place where she could buy paczkis rather than buying them from a chain grocery store. My reply was that Monica’s Baker Boy in Monroe  probably sold them although I couldn’t confirm this. Someone else responded to my reply saying that they didn’t think they did.

Well…I saw an ad in the Monroe Evening News the other night advertising Paczki Day (Tuesday, Feb. 20) at Monica’s Baker Boy. They are $9.50 per dozen. Flavors include apple, Raspberry, Cherry, Blueberry, Lemon, Strawberry, Bavarian Cream, and Vanilla cream. They are taking orders now.

Did Monica’s Baker Boy decide to sell paczkis because of my blog or did they sell them before and we just weren’t paying attention?  I won’t flatter myself. I’m sure it’s the latter. :-)

Hi Sarah! Thanks for the follow-up post, because somehow I missed that ad. Sounds yummy!

Wikipedia says that a traditional filling is marmalade made from fried rose buds. I wonder if Meijer sells that? :)

Also, the traditonal Polish day to eat a pacek is Fat Thursday, not Fat Tuesday.

    Interesting…

    Oooh. Here’s another cool line…

“It is also similar to the Greek custom of Tsiknopempti (loosely translatable as “Barbecue Thursday”), which involves the massive consumption of barbecued meat.”

Maybe it’s the caveman in me, but that seems more appealing than the doughnuts.

Wow! Are those Paczkis filled with gold filling? One would think so. Seems like the price goes up every year! I wont be buying them “local”. I will take the drive to Toledos Polish Village where they will be much much cheaper. Did I hear someone say buy local? LOL

I can see making sure one would want to get authentic Paczkis from a Polish area but it would need to be about 2 gallons of gas cheaper for me to save money by driving to Toledo.

    Barb,

Buying paczkis from an authentic mom and pop place from a Polish area in Toledo sounds like a great idea! It may not be Monroe local but it’s still a small locally owned business.

Now if you said you were going to a Tim Hortons or Dunkin Donuts to buy Paczkis just because they’re cheaper, then I’d think you were missing the point.

I bought my paczki this morning from Monica’s Baker Boy, and they were exactly what I hoped for. Yes when I lived in Ohio, I bought my family’s treats from a Polish bakery. But from now on, Monica’s will be our Monroe equivalent.

[…] A couple other bloggers, Sarah, Mike, Paula, me … have already talked about the history and culture surrounding the humble but ballistic paczki. This morning over on Sarah’s blog, Paula has already mention where she bought hers. […]
