Bo will be missed

No one would have enjoyed Saturday’s Michigan-Oho State game more than Bo Schembechler. What a shame that the man who defined Michigan football died on the eve of one of the greatest matchups in the history of this great rivalry.

I can’t claim to have known the man, but I covered a couple his games during my time at the Ann Arbor News and Monroe Evening News and got a chance to talk to him once during his tenure as president of the Detroit Tigers, when the Tiger winter caravan visited Toledo. He could be crusty and curt, but the man had a charming side.

I’ll never forget the way he spoke frankly about his heart troubles during the stop in Toledo. He was pragmatic about his ailment, saying a bypass only lasted a certain number of years before the process had to be repeated.

His doctors say is was a minor miracle that a man who suffered his first heart attack in 1969 survived as many years as he did. I am glad he got a chance to enjoy many years as an ambassador for the game after he left the sidelines. Even non-Michigan fans benefitted from that.

Just last week Bo spoke about how the Saturday’s Michigan-Ohio State winner should be crowned as national champion, forgetting about the BCS title game. He was right. These are the two best teams. They are meeting on the field to decide it. Who needs another game after this?

Somewhere in the back of my closet I have an old “M Go Bo” T-shirt my mother bought me during my college years. I might pull it out and wear it Saturday.

Note from a split family

Friday, November 17th, 2006
This note came today:
Born and raised in Ohio, I moved to Michigan when I married 18 years ago. I do like both teams, but always have been a true “Buckeye” fan. My family is split with my husband Kevin and son Austin rooting for Michigan and my daughter Ashley and I rooting for the Bucks. I have a decorated tree on my shop counter at Cinderella’s with hand painted “Brutus Heads” on true buckeyes from a tree near Bryan, OH. I have been driving my family crazy with a pen I use that plays the Ohio State fight song. I even have my Chinese Crested hairless dog, DeeOgee all ready for the game in his Ohio State gear. He sleeps on his scarlet and grey blanket and loves to play with his Ohio State football that plays the fight song. He even let me color his hair, the only hair on him besides his tail and legs. And of course I too am ready with my gear and air horn. And what would be an Ohio State game without buckeye candy, 10 dozen to be exact. I think it will be a super game. Intense to say the least. They both dominated this year. Whoever does win, deserves it!

Surprises in girls basketball

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Ron Montri rmontri@monroenews.com

It has been a week of surprises in District basketball tournaments. Monroe, the Region’s best team, lost its first tournament game. So did St. Mary Catholic Central, which was the Region’s hottest team at the close of the regular season. Dundee, which won only two games during the regular season, is in the Class C District finals. That’s part of the madness that makes the tournament so interesting.
