How bad is it for the NHL these days?
The best the league could manage for is All-Star Game – which is supposed to be a showcase of all that is right with the game – was a midweek date on a second-rate cable network.
And the Red Wings, one of the NHL’s best teams located in one of its top markets, got only one representative in the game.
Something is not right.

Sorry I missed it, but I was in the hospital trying to pass a kidney stone. Sounds like I might have been better off. Seriously though, I generally do not watch all-star events, especially hocky. Though I must admit that NHL hockey is my favorite pro sport. The problem with the NHL All Star game is that it doesn’t represent how the game is played. They might as well end it with the skills competition. The lockout/walkout couldn’t have come at a worse time for the NHL. The previous season’s playoffs went deep in almost all of the series and seven games in the finals. They had a national TV contract. Then the greed sets in. I believe both sides shot themselves in their respective feet. I think that I deem the owners at least 51 per cent to blame for allowing almost unchecked (no pun intended) expansion. I don’t know what the answer is. It’s painfully evident that the NHL doesn’t know what the answer is. But if you don’t know or care about hockey, chances are you’re not going to sit down and watch it when there is nothing else on. Especially if you don’t have cable.
Hope you are feeling better after the kidney stone.
You comments are very insightful. The All-Star Game is nearly unwatchable. Perhaps it is better that it was on Versus.
But have faith, Gary Bettman will save the game with the new form-fitting jerseys that will be imposed on all the teams next season.
