Sports talk radio and newspaper columns have been filled in recent days with discussion of the Detroit Tigers’ decision to keep Neifi Perez on the Opening Day roster ahead of Chris Shelton and Ramon Santiago.

One radio commentator said gravely, “The Tigers will regret this decision.”

Perhaps that is true, but the degree of regret is the issue here. Perez is the 25th man on the roster. You might see him in a game once or twice a week. The decision to keep him will not make or break the Tigers’ season.

The stakes were raised in Michigan’s search for a new basketball coach when Minnesota hired Tubby Smith away from Kentucky Thursday.

Now there is another outstanding coach in the Big Ten. That will make winning and recruiting more difficult.

Michigan athletic director Bill Martin needs to make a good choice to show that the Wolverines are serous about basketball.
