SMCC fans fan out

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Troy Athens had the bleachers evenly divided between St. Mary Catholic Central and Saginaw Nouvel for the Class C state volleyball quarterfinals Tuesday night.

It was a nice idea, but it didn’t work. SMCC fans spilled into the Nouvel section and onto a balcony above, outnumbering their opponents at least three to one. Nouvel, to be fair, had its basketball team playing in a Regional Tournament on the same night, but it still was an impressive showing by the SMCC faithful, which had to make a journey of more than an hour that took them through the heart of Detroit.

Speaking of fans, there also was a great turnout Saturday for both Monroe and Wyandotte at the Class A Regional at Ypsilanti Lincoln. Both sides were spirited and sportsmanlike, but I give Wyandotte credit for one of the most inventive signs I have seen in while. Three fans held up banners that spelled out the school name “Y & .”

Michigan left out again

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Michigan’s basketball team has been left out of the NCAA Tournament again.

And the sad thing is that they really have no case to make. The national shows did not even list them as one of the bubble teams that just missed.

It’s sad that the program has sunk so far.

On the other hand, Tom Izzo guided perhaps his least talented Michigan State team in a decade to another tournament berth. This was prehaps his finest coaching job.

Grand March set to start

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

The Palace of Auburn Hills is filling up and the wrestlers are lining up for the Grand March. It’s an awesome sight to see the state’s top talent parade around the arena.
