A special athlete

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I recently had the opportunity to visit with a truly special athlete.

Michael Lehmann of Monroe always dreamed of being an athlete at Notre Dame, but figured it would never happen. He was born with Muscular Dystrophy. That didn’t keep him from competing in sports as a youth, but prevented him from competing effectively against other boys.

But finally he found a sport that was perfect for him. He became a rowing coxswain and has earned a spot on Notre Dame’s team.

He has an amazing outlook on life. Everyone can learn something from his fighting spirit.

If you missed the story, pick up a copy of Sunday’s Evening News or read it on the Evening News Web Site:

Is there pressure to make deal?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

A week or so ago it appeared that the Detroit Tigers would not make a deal at the trade deadline. They seemed content to wait for Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya to return from injuries.

But last week probably changed all of that. The poor performance of the pitching staff, coupled with the injury to Kenny Rogers probably will force Dave Dombrowski to make a deal, if for nothing else to prove to the team that the organization is serious about winning this year.

Pitching painful again

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Ouch!

The Tigers had another painful pitching performance again Saturday. The really need a solid performance from Jeremy Bonderman today.

A hole in the Tiger rotation?

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Everyone has been talking about the bullpen problems for the Detroit Tigers. Is it possible that now they face a problem with the starting rotation?

Kenny Rogers has been bad the last three outings and last night Nate Robertson put the Tigers in a huge hole before settling down to pitch a few solid innings. On top of that, rookie Andrew Miller has been a little shaky at times.

Can the Tigers survive with two solid starters (Jeremy Bonderman and Justin Verlander)?

Give Toledo some credit

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

There are a lot of reasons for the Tigers’ recent success, but don’t overlook the contributions of the minor-league system.

When the Tigers need someone to fill in because of an injury, they can dip down into the Toledo Mud Hens roster and can find someone to help them.

Ryan Rayburn and his seven RBI Wednesday night is the most recent example. Mike Hessman, Timo Perez, Virgil Vasquez and a several relievers also have made valuable contributions in short stints with Detroit.

Tiger bullpen melts down again

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Just when you think the Detroit Tiger bullpen might be getting straightened out, they have a nightmare performance.

Manager Jim Leyland had to be doing a slow burn as he watched a 7-1 lead slip away in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

I was beginning to think the Tigers wouldn’t make any moves at the trade deadline, now I am not so sure. It will all depend on whether they are confident that Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya and return and pitch effectively.

Not a good time to be a commissioner

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Gary Bettman is the lucky one. The NHL commissioner takes plenty of abuse from the followers of his sport, but he has to be delighted right now that he’s not the running one of the three other major sports.

Baseball’s Bud Selig (steroids), new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (Michael Vick and other lawbreakers) and the NBA’s David Stern (referee gambling probe) all are facing major troubles. Even though he has the least experience, Goodell has been the most aggressive at attacking his problem. He handed out lengthy suspensions for Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and Chris Henry and told Michael Vick to stay away from Atlanta’s training game. Bold moves designed to show that the NFL will not tolerate unruly behavior.

Selig has been his typical wishy-washy self in dealing with steroids. He can’t even decide whether or not to follow Barry Bonds’ chase of the most hallowed record in the game. He wants it all to just go away. Stern faces the biggest crisis of all. A league that already is surrounded by conspiracy theories, now must deal with charges that gamblers were dictating the results of games.

So, which league would you like to be running now?

Horrible week for sports

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

What a week we just finished in the world of sports.

In rapid fire, the sports world was hit by the Michael Vick dogfighting charges, revelations that an NBA official might have shaved points in games under pressure from mobsters and more doping allegations in the Tour de France.

Even what should be a feel-good story – the chase to break one of baseball’s most hallowed records – is marred by the steroid controversy.

Sports used to be an escape from the real world.

As my friend and colleague Ron Montri asked in his column in Sunday’s Evening News, when will the sports pages go back to being about sports?

Road sweet road

Friday, July 20th, 2007

The Tigers have the best road record in the major leagues at 32-17, but are just 25-20 at home.
It’s hard to figure out.

They just came off an impressive three-game sweep of Minnesota to complete a 5-2 road trip then were bombed 10-2 by last place Kansas City at home Friday night.

It doesn’t make much sense.

Monroe’s last chance?

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Marcus Thames went on the disabled list today. He hurt himself making what probably was a game-saving catch Wednesday night.

That’s a tough break for him, but it could be a break for Craig Monroe. It might be his last chance to fight his way back into the lineup. Too bad for him that he is ailing at the moment, too.

Timo Perez was called up from Toledo to start in left field Thursday. Perez deserved a shot at the big leagues. He’s having a great year for the Mud Hens.
