Good for Venus, good for tennis
I was delighted to see Venus Williams win Wimbledon again Saturday.
I commented to some friends at the office the other day that she looked more fit and trim than she had in a couple of years. It looked like she was determined to return to the top of women’s tenniis. She did just that.
Tennis needed something like this. The popularity of the game has slipped badly in this country in recent years, mainly because there have been no serious American contenders.
Roger Federer might be the best player ever and Rafael Nadal is not far behind, but they don’t stir up much excitement in the U.S. If there were an American somewhere in the mix, it might be different. But sadly, none of the U.S. men appear up for the challenge.
Perhaps Venus Williams can get tennis back on the radar for American fans.
