Dramatic turnarounds

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Wow, what a strange night for Detroit sports teams!

With the Red Wings up 2-0 and the Tigers down 5-0 Monday night, it seemed certain that the Wings would continue to fly high and the Tigers were doomed to dip to 2-11.

But the Wings shockingly blew that lead and a 3-2 advantage in the final four minutes and lost 5-2 while the Tigers scored 11 times in their last three at-bats to win 11-9.

The Wings for some reason went into a defensive shell and allowed Nashville to find some life. Even coach Mike Babcock seemed shocked with how conservatively his team played. It was like a football team that goes to a prevent defense in the fourth quarter.

And you know what they say about the prevent defense: It prevents you from winning.

Now, Game 4 in Nashville almost becomes a must-win for Detroit. The Wings must snuff out any hopes the Predators might have for a comeback.

The Tigers still have a long way to before they can say they are back on track. But at least they won a game that could go a long way towards building some confidence.

Outdoor hockey

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

I planned to watch football all day Monday, but as I was flipping through the channels I stumbled upon the outdoor NHL game pitting Pittsburgh against Buffalo and wound up watching quite a bit of it during commercial breaks for the Michigan football game.

It was very entertaining with a big crowd packed into a football stadium and snow showers popping up intermittently throughout the afternoon. On top of that, it was a great game, going down to a shootout.

The NHL is famous for messing up its marketing, but this was perfect. A fresh idea on a holiday. Maybe it will become a tradition like Thanksgiving Day games in the NFL.

Is Osgood the man?

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Last night’s win over Nashville made Chris Osgood 8-0 this season as the starter for the Detroit Red Wings.

His goals-against average (1.48) and save percentage (.936) both are better than Dominik Hasek.

Should Osgood remain as the No. 1 netminder when Hasek returns from his injury?

My bet is that coach Mike Babcock will continue to list Hasek as No. 1, but will look for more opportunities to put Osgood in net. That will be good for Hasek, giving him more rest.

Not a good time to be a commissioner

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Gary Bettman is the lucky one. The NHL commissioner takes plenty of abuse from the followers of his sport, but he has to be delighted right now that he’s not the running one of the three other major sports.

Baseball’s Bud Selig (steroids), new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (Michael Vick and other lawbreakers) and the NBA’s David Stern (referee gambling probe) all are facing major troubles. Even though he has the least experience, Goodell has been the most aggressive at attacking his problem. He handed out lengthy suspensions for Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson and Chris Henry and told Michael Vick to stay away from Atlanta’s training game. Bold moves designed to show that the NFL will not tolerate unruly behavior.

Selig has been his typical wishy-washy self in dealing with steroids. He can’t even decide whether or not to follow Barry Bonds’ chase of the most hallowed record in the game. He wants it all to just go away. Stern faces the biggest crisis of all. A league that already is surrounded by conspiracy theories, now must deal with charges that gamblers were dictating the results of games.

So, which league would you like to be running now?

Bye, Bye Bertuzzi

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Mike Szanerowsky must be happy now that Todd Bertuzzi has left the Detroit Red Wings to sign with Anaheim.

Szanerowsky is the Monroe hockey fan I wrote about a few months ago who said he would not watch another Detroit game as long as Bertuzzi was in a Red Wing uniform.

Well, his nemesis is gone, but there is a hole left in the Detroit roster. So far this offseason, they have lost Bertuzzi, Robert Lang and Mathieu Schneider and say they can not afford to keep Danny Markov. The only significant addition is defenseman Brian Rafalski.

The summer hasn’t been very much fun for Wings’ general manager Ken Holland so far.

What do you think Holland should do? Are there any free agents out there that you like?

Personally, I think Ryan Smith would be a great fit, but he might be too expensive.

Stirred by not shaking

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Chris Chelios has created a stir by not shaking the hands of the Anaheim Ducks after the Red Wings fell Tuesday night in the Western Conference finals.

Frankly, I don’t understand the uproar. Sure, it is tradition to shake hands after a Stanley Cup playoff series, but who cares if Chelios didn’t want to get in line. Maybe he was afraid that something bad would happen.

Sometimes it is better just to head to the lockerroom.

I was covering a high school football game a few years ago that got so nasty that the referees decided to call the game early. The team that was behind was going for cheap shots on nearly every play and openly boasting about how they were going to hurt someone.

When the referees wisely ended this advertisement for bad sportsmanship, the coaches decided for some reason to line up their players for the traditional postgame handshakes. It was recipe for trouble and everyone knew it. I heard the coach of the winning team tell his players to keep their helmets on and mouthguards in for the handshake.

Sure enough, someone from the losing team took a swing at one of his opponents and a fight broke out. The police had to be called to break up the melee.

Sometimes NOT shaking hands is a good idea.

No respect

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

The National Hockey League initiated a package with Versus/NBC primarily because of money, but hockey is suffering as a consequence.

Vs. does not nearly have the viewers that ESPN does. And we were witness to just how important the NHL is to NBA Saturday. The final game of the Ottawa-Buffalo series went to sudden-death overtime, yet NBC cut off the broadcast for a Preakness Stakes pregame show.

That was an embarrassment to hockey which has sold its soul for some additional cash. At the very least, NBC could have put the rest of the game on one of its cable affiliates.

Who will win it all?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

The Red Wings are headed to the conference finals after Monday night’s 2-0 win over San Jose.

The Piston might not be far behind. They have dominated Chicago in the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Which team do you think has the best chance to bring home a championship?

Lucky Wings shirt

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I need some help here. Not being a naturally superstitious sort, I don’t know how to handle this situation.

I bought a Detroit Red Wings shirt the other day and wore it for the first time during Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Calgary. I wore it again during Sunday’s 2-1 double-overtime win to finish off the Flames.

I think I am now required to wear it for every game until they lose.

My question is this: Am I allowed to wash it or would that remove all of the good luck?

Give me your playoff advice. And please share your sports superstitions. Do you have to sit in a certain seat, where a particular outfit, eat a special meal before a game?

Great day for sports

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

What a great day for sports in Detroit!

The Tigers taking on Central Division foe Chicago at 1 p.m., then a playoff doubleheader with the Red Wings at 3 p.m. and the Pistons at 7. And all three are at home. Detroit (and Auburn Hills) will be jumping.

I’ve got to make sure I have fresh batteries in my TV remote.
