The technology is working!

I am sitting here at the Division 1 state softball semifinals watching Monroe play New Baltimore Anchor Bay. In previous trips here, the wireless connection would not work at the press table. I was pleasantly surprised to get a signal this time.

Monroe’s Amber Rafko was safe on an error in the top of the first, but the Trojans did not score.

All-Star Games rescheduled

The Monroe Evening News All-Star softball and baseball games scheduled for Saturday night have been postponed by rain.

Both have been rescheduled. The softball game to be played at 6 p.m. Sunday at Monroe High and the baseball game to be played at 6 p.m. Monday at Airport..

The Evening News All-Star Baseball and Softball games had to be postponed because of Saturday’s thunderstorms.
Tentative plans call for the softball game to be played at 6 p.m. Sunday and the baseball game to be played Monday.
I will post an update when I know more.

All-Star game turns 20

It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago that Monroe coach Vince Rossi first pitched the idea of an All-Star Game for the best senior softball players in Monroe County Region to the Evening News sports staff.

From Shelley Looney and Dawn Forter to Jessica Irwin and Ashley Gilson, the game has produced many memorable moments.

I love the relaxed atmosphere of the game. Girls who have competed hard against each other all season create lasting friendships in just a few hours.

I’m always covering the softball game, so I’ve never seen The Evening News Baseball All-Star Game (which started 10 years later), but I am sure it is the same way for the baseball players.

Saturday night the stars take the field again with the baseball game at 5 p.m. at Airport and the softball game at 6 p.m. at Monroe. I can’t wait.

Spectactular softball

I was just watching a little of the World Cup of Softball on ESPN.

I am constantly amazed that the skill level of these ladies. Softball, figure skating and gymnastics are the three sports where I believe women shine the brightest in athletics.

That’s not to say they don’t do well in other sports, but in those three they are as good or better than their male counterparts.

SMCC is runner-up

SMCC is accepting its state runner-up medals after falling 8-0 to Unionville Sebewaing in the Division 3 state softball finals.

The Kestrels finish with a 26-11 record.

SMCC deficit grows

USA has added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to build its lead to 7-0. One of the runs was on a solo home run.

The Patriots still have the bases loaded with one out. Carlie Giarmo has come in to pitch for SMCC.

SMCC down 4-0 after five

USA added another run in the fifth inning and nearly blew the game open. Leftfielder Kristen Drabek reached over the fence to snare what would have been a three-run homer for the final out of the inning.

SMCC has the top of its order up in the sixth inning.

Unionville Sebewaing has cleared the leftfield fence again as Danielle Gremel went deep for a solo homer.

SMCC trails 3-0 after four innings of the Division 3 state title game.

SMCC wastes two hits

SMCC had two hits in the top of the third, but failed to score.

Amy Terrasi singled with one out, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Alicia Flynn followed with a single to right, but was left at first base.

USA went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

It’s still USA 2, SMCC 0.
