Live chat about Red Wings

April 10th, 2009

You asked for it, you’ve got it.
During our last live chat on the Detroit Tigers, someone suggested that we do one on the Red Wings. It was a great idea. It’s going to happen at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14.
I’ve dragged my buddy and fellow Evening News writer Ray Kisonas in for this one. He is a long-time hockey fan with plenty of opinions on the game.
Join us for some lively discussion on the Wings and the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Ron Montri on the hot seat

March 3rd, 2009

I helped the Monroe Evening News kick off its live chat feature Sunday night with a discussion of girls basketball in the county.

And the chat was lively.

My boss, Ron Montri, takes his turn this Sunday with a discussion on boys basketball. It will begin at 8 p.m. Watch for details in the next few days in The Evening News sports section or at www.monroenews.com .

Good show Bedford, Monroe

March 3rd, 2009

I saw two girls basketball games in the same gymnasium Monday night, but you would have thought they were being played in different universes.

When Airport and Adrian tipped off around 5:30 p.m. in the Class A District Tournament at Monroe, there were maybe 100 people in Bill Bunkelman Memorial Gymnasium, including the players, coaches and officials.

By the time Monroe and Bedford took the floor around 7 p.m., the place was nearly full. It was a great atmosphere with enthusiastic fans on both sides really getting into the action.

These two teams deserved a big crowd. Bedford brought a 20-0 record into the game and Monroe was 17-3 with all three losses coming to state-ranked teams.

The game turned out to be pretty much what I expected. Both teams played terrific defense, contesting every point.

It’s a shame that this wasn’t the District championship game on a Friday night. It might have drawn even more fans then. But that’s just the luck of the draw.

Monroe came up on the short end of the scoreboard, but the Trojans have nothing to hang their heads about. They represented their school and their community well all season.

Live chat on girls hoops

February 28th, 2009

There was a mistake in today’s (Saturday) Evening News.
The live chat on girls basketball that will on Monroe Talk (www.monroetalks.com) is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday night. We mistakenly listed it as tonight in today’s sports section.
We apologize for the error.
This is the first time we’ve tried a live chat on Monroe Talks. It should be fun. Show up Sunday night and hit me with your best questions on girls hoops.
If it goes well, Sports Editor Ron Montri will be doing one on boys basketball next Sunday.

WDFN cuts back

January 20th, 2009

I was hoping my buddy Jeff Meade was wrong.

I was shocked to read his column in today’s Evening News (http://www.monroenews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090120/MEADESPTSCOL/101209974) and discover that sports talk radio WDFN was planning to drop all of its local programming.

I’ve enjoyed having two sports talk stations in Detroit. When one got boring, you could switch to the other. I’ve always believed that WXYT was a poor imitation of WDFN. That said, some of the WDFN programming had gotten stale.

I wouldn’t have minded losing the other local shows, if the station had kept the “Stoney and Wojo” show in the afternoon. Those two had the most entertaining sports talk show in Detroit. Perhaps they will show up somewhere else.
