All but two TCC teams idle until Jan. 6

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Whiteford will take its 2-1 record into the finals of the Emmanuel Christian tournament Saturday. It will be the only boys TCC game until Jan. 3 when Morenci plays Lenawee Christian. The TCC boys teams get back into the swing of things Jan. 6 with a full slate of league games.
Whiteford’s victory tonight, by the way, was the first non-conference win for the TCC other than Summerfield.

Whiteford vs. City League

Friday, December 26th, 2008

The Whiteford Bobcats have a great record against Toledo City League opponents all time.
The Bobcats will take on Toledo Bowsher Saturday night in the finals of the Emmanuel Christian Warrior Classic. It will be the fifth game all-time for Whiteford vs. a Toledo City League opponent. The Bobcats beat Toledo Start three times in the 1980s and lost to Toledo Devilbiss once in the 1978-79 season.

TCC coaches take in the game

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Saw several coaches and former coaches with TCC ties Friday at the Emmanuel Christian Warrior Christmas Classic.
Madison coach Jeff Webster was in attendance, as was former Whiteford coaches Brad Stevens and John Rice. John Lindsay coached Deerfield several seasons and is now head coach at Ottawa Hills in Ohio. He was in attendance as well.

Bobcats, Rebels make finals

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Whiteford will play in the finals of the Emmanuel Christian Warrior Christmas Classic Saturday after defeating the host school, 70-39, Friday night.
The Bobcats got 21 points from Jake DuPree and 17 from Travis Pant in defeating the host school. The Bobcats played with only seven players.
Whiteford will face Toledo Bowsher in the finals. Bowsher beat Adrian Lenawee Christian by 19 points in the first game of the night Friday. Bowsher, coached by former Whiteford coach John Rice (the 2nd winningest coach in Monroe County Region history), is 2-3 on the season but have won two straight, including wins over Toledo Scott and Lenawee Christian.
This will be the second time Rice has coached against Whiteford after he spent 30 seasons on the sidelines for Whiteford. His Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard squad beat Whiteford in his first game after leaving the Bobcat coaching job.

Boys league games tonight

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Lots of interesting matchups tonight around the TCC as the first league boys games are played.
Britton (0-3) at Whitmore Lake (0-2): Both teams have had rough starts offensively. Will Whitmore Lake gets it high-powered offense in gear?
Deerfield (0-1) at Whiteford (0-1): Whiteford got 29 points from Brandon Albright in its season opener, a high-scoring affair with Blissfield.
Summerfield (3-0) at Madison (0-3): Summerfield beat Madison once last year, handing the Trojans one of its two losses on a 21-2 season. The Bulldogs are off to a 3-0 start and are the only TCC team with a win so far.
Morenci (0-2) at Sand Creek (0-2): The TCC has a whole has struggled offensively this season, including Sand Creek (44.0 points a game) and Morenci (48 ppg). This matchup provides Morenci graduate Sid Disbrown, the new SC head coach, with his first opportunity against his alma mater.

Football coaching moves

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

This hasn’t been confirmed, but I’ve heard that Bedford graduate D.J. Lutz has been hired as the new head football coach at Britton-Deerfield.
And, last week, Morenci announced it had hired Tom Saylor (the coach during Hudson’s amazing win streak in the 1970s) as its next coach.

Summerfield remains only TCC team with win

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Summerfield moved to 3-0 Monday by beating Erie Mason 57-51.
The Bulldogs remain the only TCC team with a victory this season. Britton fell to Waldron (52-50) and Madison lost to Grass Lake (50-44) last night while Whiteford fell to Blissfield (77-68).
Clinton plays Vandercook Lake and Whitmore Lake takes on Dexter tonight.
Thursday is the first night of league action.

Bobcats fall – Royals 2-1 in TCC tour

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Whiteford fell 77-68 to Blissfield in its season opener Monday, despite a 29-point effort in Brandon Albright’s first varsity appearance.
The win for Blissfield means the Royals are 2-1 against TCC opponents.

Bobcats debut tonight

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Whiteford will debut its 2008-09 boys basketball team tonight with a road game at Blissfield.
The Royals have split a pair of games against TCC opponents, beating Sand Creek and losing to Summerfield.
In other TCC games tonight, Madison (0-2) is at Grass Lake; Britton (0-2) takes on Waldron, and Summerfield (the only TCC team to record a win so far) plays tonight at Erie Mason.
Here’s a piece from today’s Monroe Evening News on Whiteford’s opener: (more…)
