Girls basketball records

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

My newest project with the TCC is putting together a more complete and thorough history and record book for girls basketball.
I have a pretty complete book for the TCC boys basketball and football (all box scores, all scores, complete records) and nearly everything when it comes to final standings, all-TCC teams, etc. for the rest of the sports. Now, I’m doing more research on girls basketball. If anyone can help out with stats, please let me know (doug@monroenews.com).

TCC boys basketball series results

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Someone asked me if I knew how many times one team has beaten another in TCC boys basketball. I figured I’d answer all of that at once. Here is a look at each teams’ all-time (1974-2009) win-loss record in Tri-County Conference games against all other TCC opponents:

Some notes: Ann Arbor St. Thomas was a member of the league from 1974-1976; Whiteford and Sand Creek joined in 1975-76; Morenci joined in 1981-82; Whitmore Lake did not field a basketball team in 1982-83; Whitmore Lake and Morenci canceled a 1990-91 game; Clinton joined the TCC in 2007-08.

Britton vs. Deerfield, 1974-2009

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I’ve done some additional research on the Britton-Deerfield series. From 1974 to date, Deerfield has won 40 of the 79 meetings.
So, from 1960-61 to the present season, Britton won 61 and Deerfield won 49 games in the 110 meetings between the two teams.
Does anyone know how far back the rivalry goes? When did the two schools start playing basketball?

Britton-Deerfield, 1960-1973

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I’ve started the research: From 1960 to 1973, Britton and Deerfield met 31 times on the basketball floor and the Tories won 22 of those meetings, dominating the Minutemen through a good stretch early in the decade, the same time the Tories were collecting back-to-back state championship trophies.
britton Some highlights:
On March 9, 1963, Britton’s 6-foot-8 Phil Benedict  (pictured in the above photo during a jump ball in a state tournament game) scored 34 points in the District final for a Britton win.
On March 6, 1964, Ron Mastie scored 31 as the Tories won the District title with a 77-73 win over Deerfield. It launched a second-straight state title for Britton.
On Feb. 5, 1964, the Tories won a 4 overtime matchup.
On Dec. 10, 1965, Deerfield beat Britton 39-37 in the first game played in the new Deerfield gymnasium.
On Feb. 28, 1969, Britton scored 37 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 101-72 win.
And, on Dec. 19, 1971, Sam Bates of Britton scored 44 points as the Tories won.

Britton vs. Deerfield: A historical perspective

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Britton and Deerfield will combine basketball teams next season, ending a great rivalry in the TCC.
Randy Salisbury from Britton has asked if I might know what the all-time record between Britton and Deerfield is. I’m researching that info now and plan on having an answer to him – and on this blog – soon. I do know that in TCC games only, each team won 37 games in the series.
I hope to post all of the results between the two teams soon.
