TCC Player of the Week

Monday, August 31st, 2009

It’s hard to argue with what Nick  Amador did in his debut as the starting quarterback for Adrian Madison. He ran or passed for 476 yards, had two touchdown passes and ran for one as Madison was one of six TCC teams to start the season 1-0.

HM goes to Travis Pant of Whiteford, Mike Hewitt of Summerfield, Andrew Prielipp of Britton-Deerfield, and Brett bovee of Morenci.

Around the league, week 1

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Let’s cover the TCC from week one:

Morenci got things rollling with a 51-3 victory over Oakland Christian Thursday. It was  good way to start for Tom Saylor and his rejuvenated Bulldogs. Chas Frey scored three touchdowns and Brett Bovee threw for a trio of touchdowns.

Sand Creek fell in its opener, 45-7, to a strong Blissfield squad that is ranked No. 2 in Division 6 by Detroit Free Press prep football writer Mick McAbe. Lucas Rains completed 14 passes for 132 yards for the Aggies.

Another ranked team — Manchester, No. 6 in Division 6 by the Free Press — was succesful in its season opener against a TCC school. Clinton fell 21-14 to Manchester in two overtimes. Manchester scored on a fourth-down play in the first overtime. Jesse Sexton ran for 140 yards and Hayden Craig, the Redskin quarterback, had a pair of TD passes to lead Clinton.

Whiteford got a big victory in its season opener, beating Pittsford and its talented quarterback Garrett Lee, 34-13. Bobcat fans had a few scary moments, but saw the home team take control in the second half. Travis Pant ran for and passed for more than 100 yards in the win, threw for a TD and ran for three TDs. Phil Wingate had a 94-yard TD run and three turnovers by Pittsford helped the cause. A couple of fourth-down stops by the Bobcat defense were huge.

Britton-Deerfield got three TD passes from new quarterback Andrew Prielipp and beat Waldron, 26-14. Coach DJ Lutz didn’t name a starting quarterback until a couple days before the first game, but Prielipp looked good with six completions and 149 yards passing. BD scored on its first two possessions to set the tone. Brady Southward ran for 111 yards and Brandon Pirolli had an oustanding game at linebacker.

Madison was more than impressive in its 34-19 win over North Adams-Jerome. QB Nick Amador threw for 328 yards and Zack Brewer caught passes for 215 yars in the win. Amador also ran for 148 yards, giving him nearly 476 yards of total offense in the first game of the season.

Whitmore Lake defeated Perry, 28-6, as Robert McIntyre caught 7 passes for 165 yards from QB Chase St. Charles. McIntyre was first team All-State last year and could repeat that with more games like he had against Perry.

Summerfield had an impressive offense, rolling to a 59-0 lead at halftime. Chase Blake, Jake Ladd, Eric Cogan, Mike Hewitt, Dikota Townsend, Brian Denham, Jake Gilstorff … the list goes on among Bulldogs who had impressive performances.

Wingate’s run a record-breaker

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Whiteford’s Phill Wingate had one carry Friday night, but he made it count.

Wingate took the ball from near his own goal line, got hit at the line but somehow kept his balance and rambled 94 yards for a touchdown in the first half of Whiteford’s huge 34-13 win over Pittsford.

The run was one for the record books — the longest rushing touchdown in Whiteford history, surpassing a 92-yard run by Tony Howard in 1976.

If you are a defensive coordinator in the Tri-County Conference, get ready for some sleepless nights.

If you are a defensive back in the TCC, get ready for some long games.

The TCC is loaded with offensive talent, from pass-happy quarterbacks to tall and speedy receivers to a host of talented running backs.

“I expect a lot of points to be put on the board this year,” said second-year Summerfield coach Erik Johnson.

WHITEFORD: Bobcats hope platoon system works

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Eighth in a series of stories previewing the 2009 TCC football campaign

By DOUG DONNELLY
OTTAWA LAKE – Having enough bodies is always a concern for most TCC football teams.

This year at Whiteford, head coach Jack Luettke isn’t worried about just having enough bodies, but having enough bodies to have fewer players on the field on both sides of the ball.

“We’re doing a little bit more of platooning, especially on the lines,” Luettke said. “We only have three or four players going on both sides of the ball. We’re trying to do it.”
