Welcome to the TCC would like to send condolences to the Hewitt family of Petersburg.
Terry Ann Hewitt, 47, died Sunday in Sylvania. She was a 1980 Summerfield graduate and mother of current Bulldog quarterback Mike Hewitt.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Walk or the Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania. Online condolences may be sent to www.capaulfuneralhome.com.
Summerfield’s 5-0 start has been sensational and has fans in Petersburg excited to say the least.
The Bulldogs put up more than 400 yards of offense last week against Sand Creek and despite giving up 35 points still had some defensive stars like Eric Cogan (58 yard interception return) and Jake Gilstorff (one interception) and Jake Ladd (12 tackles).
2009 is the first time Summerfield has started the season 5-0 since the 1985 team reeled off seven straight wins to start the season. One more win and the Bulldogs are playoff-bound for the second year in a row (and second time ever).
Friday’s night lineup, with a brief version of What 2 Watch 4:
Britton-Deerfield at Whiteford: The Bobcats need a win after a 40-8 setback to Clinton last week but they enter the game banged up. BD has lost three straight after starting the season 2-0.
Clinton at Madison: Watch out for Madison with Theisen, Brewer, Amador and Cook. The Redskins can run the ball (Sexton) and throw the ball (Craig) and play defense (Leverenz) as well as anybody.
Morenci at Summerfield: Morenci lost a 27-0 lead to Madison last week, but have an explosive offense. Summerfield is undefeated and its homecoming for them.
Sand Creek at Whitmore Lake: The Aggies are improving each week and need wins in its final four games to avoid a sub-.500 season. Don’t count them out. Whitmore Lake’s running game has been slow to take off, but Chase St. Charles has two outstanding receivers in Robert McIntyre and Colton Judge.
Mike Hewitt of Summerfield had an outstanding game Friday at Sand Creek and has earned this week’s TCC Player of the Week by the Welcome to the TCC blog.
Hewitt threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner on a 4th and 20 play. He also ran for a score.
HM: Jesse Sexton had another big week, rushing for more than 200 yards again, in Clinton’s win over Whiteford; Zach Brewer had another outstanding game for Madison; Madison’s Drew Theisen ran for 136 yards and passed for 115; Chase St. Charles of Whitmore Lake threw for 210 yards and four touchdowns; Eric Cogan of Summerfield caught two touchdowns, returned an interception for a touchdown and finished the game with 9 receptions for 169 yards.
It’s a bit premature, but what the heck? Who in the TCC are All-State candidates this year?
There’s a good crop of receivers putting up big numbers with Eric Cogan (Summerfield), Zack Brewer (Madison) and Robert McIntyre (Whitmore Lake). McIntyre was first team All-State last year.
Jesse Sexton (Clinton) is already over the 1,000-yard mark making him a prime candidate.
And, everyone’s talking about Clinton lineman Andrew Leverenz. I saw him play against Whiteford Friday. He certainly is an outstanding defensive player that will make some All-State lists at some point this post-season, especially if the Redskins continue to win.
There might be more. Anyone else have an opinion on some All-State candidates?
Jesse Sexton went over the 1,000-yard mark Friday in Clinton’s 40-8 win over Whiteford. He now has 1,087 yards on the season after another 200-plus yard day.
Three TCC teams scored exactly 40 points Friday.
Clinton and Summerfield remained undefeated, Madison won despite trailing 27-0 and Whitmore Lake got another 200 yards passing from its quarterback in its victory.
I’m still checking to see if any single TCC game has ever had three safeties as the Whiteford-Clinton game did Friday. My hunch is no, but I’m working on it.
Scores:
Clinton 40, Whiteford 8
Madison 40, Morenci 33
Summerfield 40, Sand Creek 35
Whitmore Lake 25, Britton-Deerfield 6
It’s almost time for every school in the state to officially count its enrollment for the 2009-10 school year.
The MHSAA lists the most recent enrollment figures on its Web site. Below is a list of the enrollments for all TCC high schools — and, for comparison’s sake — those for the nearby Lenawee County Athletic Association (LCAA).
