A binder full of information

November 11th, 2009

I started collecting Whiteford sports information when I was about eight or nine years old. It started with newspaper clippings.Over the years, that collection expanded to include everything I could get my hands on (programs, stat sheets, scorebooks) and, eventually everything I could find from the TCC. That’s how the TCC record book was born – that and I had to figure out something to do with all of the data I have.

This week, one of the Whiteford assistant football coaches, Aaron Winslow, sent me an e-mail saying he was doing some cleaning and found an old three-ring binder that he thought I might be interested in. I picked it up last night. After literally dusting it off (really … it was incredibly dusty), I found a treasure of information inside. It was just about every scorebook in Whiteford’s short-lived wrestling program.

Whiteford started wrestling in the early 1970s and went into the early 1980s. Although the TCC never has sanctioned wrestling as an official sport, several teams have had big success in the sport. Madison was a state power when the league began, winning several state championships and having 22 state champions between 1974 and 1982. Morenci has added to that impressive list of TCC champs since it joined the league while Whiteford and Whitmore Lake also have had individuals make it through the state tournament. Clinton has long had a wrestling program and joined the TCC in 2007.  Several schools have meets in which they call it a TCC meet, but, officially it is not.

I’m still removing the dust and looking through those wrestling books that Aaron found for me. Essentially, I probably now can tell anyone who asks the W-L record of every Whiteford wrestler ever. So, if anyone ever asks that question – I’m not expecting a big onslaught, but who knows – I’ll be more prepared to answer.

I’m glad Aaron chose to save that binder and not toss it. And, it reminded me, again, of a previous plea of mine — don’t throw away those scorebooks! No matter what sport, I hope coaches and athletic directors are saving the information because some day, someone like me will come around asking something like ‘Who scored the most points for the team in 1987?’ and without scorebooks and related-data sheets, that information will be lost.

Thanks, Aaron.

Clinton in final

November 11th, 2009

Clinton’s volleyball team (TCC champs) advanced to a Class C Regional final Tuesday by defeating league foe Adrian Madison in the Regional semifinal at Hudson.

The Redskins will face Bronson, which beat Monroe St. Mary CC.

Clinton beat Madison in a thrilling 25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25 and 20-18.

The finals are at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Coming next week: All-Region

November 10th, 2009

The Monroe Evening News’ annual All-Region team has been picked and will appear in the newspaper next week.

The very first All-Region team came out in 1972 and has been an annual thing except for one year – 1978 – in which just Players of the Year were chosen. The team is chosen by Evening News sports writers, based on recommendations from coaches.
