Valentine’s Day for the tech-geek

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

I’m not a big Valentine’s Day guy, but this year I decided I should act on it and buy my wife something. I have it a little rougher than you all. My wife is a tech-geek. Probably more so than myself. So shopping gets a little more complicated. The good thing is, she is also a big music fan, so I picked her up an iTunes gift card. She will just have to log into iTunes music store, enter the # on the back, and begin downloading her favorite songs/tv-shows/movies. I can guess though, that she’ll be picking up the 2006 released My Chemical Romance album Black Parade (check out the recent popular radio-played-tune Famous Last Words). Way cooler than chocolates.

Along with the card/iTunes gift card, I thought I would go the extra mile, and include a poem in the card (chicks dig poems - this will score you major points).
A poem?! Yeah, I wouldn’t normally suggest it, but check this out:
Love Poem Generator. Drop your girls name in the box and click a button. You can edit the poem to your liking and print it.

Thank me later. Happy Valentine’s day.

Speaking of coffee - Cafe Classics, downtown Monroe, MI - has a new coffee on tap. Shock - boasts a high-energy hyper-caffeinated coffee. If you see a half dozen “hyper” posts from DJ today on Revolving World, you’ll know the coffee lived up to its name!

Tuesday morning coffee links

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

My way of waking up some mornings is reading through all of the RSS feeds I’ve subscribed to, while enjoying a freshly brewed cup of java. I present to you, my Tuesday morning coffee links:

Unlock a car with a tennis ball
. This won’t work on my 89 Honda Civic, but it’s worth a try on those newer high-tech locking vehicles (with power windows and windshield washing devices!).

UselessAccount - this site pokes fun at all of the new WWW start-ups, and all of the registrations you’ve had to fill out to use the sites.

Online photo editing review: Tech Crunch reviews some website photo editing tools that are pretty handy in a pinch. I remember reading an article years back about the future of a “photoshop browser”.. I never believed it would happen!

Back in the 80’s, if you didn’t have a Trapper Keeper with a Knight Rider theme on the cover, you were lame. Check out the future of these binder folders - now mp3 player compatible!

WildRecipes.com: Great site for those recipes you’ve been digging the internet for. Scrambled Brains - yes, I have had this dish, not as bad as it sounds.

Top ten weirdest keyboards! The flexible keyboard is really pretty cool.

AreYouWatchingThis?! A new startup featured on TechCrunch yesterday. A “digg like” site for sports.

Tax time

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

I’ve had this fear, ever since I can remember, of doing my own taxes, messing something up and feds busting down my door and dragging me away.
I read an article about a tax company messing up someones taxes, and came to the conclusion that the companies are just as likely to make an error as we are.
I started thinking maybe I should take a crack at it, but wasn’t sure where to begin. I mentioned it to the CFO of our company, and he strongly suggested TaxSlayer.com. He explained to me that this website takes you step by step through the process, asking you questions, and you answer them, and fill in blanks.
I did my taxes last year with it, and it really is that easy. And if your confused, the site provides links with examples. It really makes you feel comfortable and confident that your doing your taxes correctly.
I received my refund shortly after (direct deposit), and guess what? No feds busting down my door! I sound like a commercial, hey Tax Slayer - can I get a free lunch out of this?! :)
