A Google car?!

“Under sunny skies, Google.org chief Larry Brilliant drove a white plug-in Prius emblazoned with the Google colors into a parking bay whose roof is covered with solar panels, part of the company’s 1.6 megawatt solar installation – the nation’s largest. He got out of the car and grabbed one of the retractable power cords hanging from the roof and plugged in the Prius to applause from the Googlers and guests.” Read more.

I like the Prius quite a bit. In fact, I like most of the Toyota vehicles. However, the price I’m likely to get a Prius for according to Edmunds.com is about $10k more than what I paid for my Elantra. My Elantra consistently gets over 30MPG. Let’s say that the Prius gets 60MPG (I have heard that in reality it’s usually more like 45MPG) and that gas is $4 a gallon all the time.

If my hasty math is correct then at $4/gallon I would need to put 150k miles on my Elantra before I would have a net savings from driving the Prius. If gas hovers at $3/gallon that makes the break even point what, 200k miles? This is even before considering inflation or the possibility that my driving needs could decrease (I doubt that they could increase any further).

I’d love a hybrid but my car is a tool to get me from place to place and the additional cost is not even close to worth it to me.

I heard the Prius’ also have a sweet feature – keyless entry, which, most cars have, but I guess the doors unlock as you walk close to the vehicle. And, the same when you get in the car, the car recognizes the key is in its presence, press a button and the car starts up.. I haven’t researched this, but just saw a speaker at the college talking about it – I had no clue that technology existed. I’m JUST on my first vehicle that i press a button to unlock the doors.. I’m loving it. haha.
