Angelo, I responded to someone elses query about mines and posted a website that goes over the history of the Bureau of Reclamation. In that history it stated that there are over 500,000 abandoned mines in America!
Talk about a Swiss Cheese nation. I'm with you. If we keep disturbing the earth the way we bury nuclear waste, keep filling trash dumps, mining, poking holes around for more natural gas we're heading for trouble. Right now in Michigan they are drilling a well for pumping CO2 into that is captured through the gasification process so we can keep on using our filthy coalburners. I wrote a blog about a lake that literally blew up in Africa due to CO2 build up on the bottom. The resulting cloud of gas killed 1700 people as it traveled miles during the night. Nice real nice hey? Yet that's our big plan for now, to pump the CO2 into the ground. It's clearly experimental at this stage, which just tells me we don't know what we're doing but willing to risk catastrophe to help the utilities that promote the use of coal. I really don't want anymore alternative energy that leaves any residual toxic mess any longer. The sooner we promote wind, solar, and geothermal power together, along with strong conservation programs, the quicker the innovation so that we can begin a future that is truly green.
